Explosion proof mobile phone for gas, LNG and pipelines in Greece

An explosion proof mobile phone for gas work in Greece has to suit three very different places: the Revithoussa LNG terminal in the Gulf of Megara, the floating storage and regasification unit off Alexandroupolis in the Thracian Sea, and the Greek leg of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline, which enters the country at Kipoi on the Turkish border. This page is for the HSE, instrumentation and telecoms teams who decide what a technician may carry past the gate at each of them. The IS-04Z1 is designed around intrinsic safety rather than a flameproof enclosure.

What is classified at Revithoussa, Alexandroupolis and along the TAP route

Revithoussa is an islet in the Gulf of Megara, about 45 km west of Athens, and its terminal is operated by DESFA. Three shore tanks hold 225,000 m³ of LNG, and a floating storage unit moored roughly 700 m from the terminal lifts the total to about 370,000 m³. The jetty, tank area, vaporisation plant and floating unit are separate classified zones, so people move between them by road and small boat rather than across one fence line. Alexandroupolis is the opposite arrangement. Gastrade's 170,000 m³ FSRU lies in the Thracian Sea about 18 km south-west of the town and some 10 km from the nearest shore, and has been in commercial operation since 1 October 2024 and a regasification capacity of 5.5 billion m³ a year. The Greek section of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline runs for about 550 km, with a single compressor station near Kipoi and 23 block valve stations, and leaves for Albania at the western border. Most of that length is unmanned; the classified places are the compressor station, the pig traps, the valve and metering stations, and the interconnection with the Greek transmission system at Nea Messimvria.

What gas work does to an explosion proof mobile phone

The classification decides whether a handset may be carried at all; the layout decides how long it stays useful.

Methane is the easy gas group; the equipment is not

Natural gas is gas group IIA, so the IIC marking target of the IS-04Z1 (II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, certification in progress) covers it with margin. The figure to check is the temperature class against the surface-temperature limit on the area drawing.

Wet decks on the LNG side

Spray, condensation and the odd cold-cargo splash are normal around the Revithoussa jetty. IP68 sealing lets a handset be rinsed down.

Offshore means no charger and no second trip

A technician on a floating unit cannot nip back for a spare. The 4,000 mAh cell is sized for a working day with the camera and a work order application in use.

Remote stations with patchy coverage

A block valve station in the hills of northern Greece may have weak mobile coverage. Four-constellation GNSS fixes the location regardless of signal, and an offline-capable inspection application can synchronise on return.

Photography under control

Gas terminals are strategic infrastructure and photography is normally restricted. The 50 MP camera is useful for defect records, so the practical answer is an Android Enterprise policy that your own console can enforce, with the camera allowed in some areas and locked in others.

Use cases · Gas, LNG and pipelines

Where the IS-04Z1 goes to work.

Work is organised differently at each. Revithoussa runs routine rounds and cargo windows, with contractors for plant shutdowns; the Alexandroupolis unit is staffed as a vessel, with technicians arriving by boat; the pipeline is dispersed crews on inspection circuits, with specialists called to Kipoi. Each operator runs its own contractor onboarding and permit rules. We claim no relationship with DESFA, Gastrade or TAP; this is what their teams would ask of any equipment supplier.

Terminal01

Cargo arrival at Revithoussa

When an LNG carrier berths, the shore team, the marine staff and the surveyor all work to a tight window around the transfer arms. One handset carrying the checklist, the permit and a photograph of each connection saves the trip back to the control building.

Floating unit02

Rounds on an FSRU

Alexandroupolis is a vessel, so acceptance of equipment on its deck follows the flag administration and class society rather than a plant explosion protection document alone. A handset for that work needs the marine route assessed first; the onshore connection is treated separately.

Pipeline03

Valve station and compressor inspection

A crew on a TAP inspection round drives between block valve stations, checks valve position and leak status, and logs each visit with a location and a photograph. At the Kipoi compressor station the same crew meet permit-to-work rules for a classified compressor hall.

Questions · Gas, LNG and pipelines

Frequently asked questions

Can the IS-04Z1 be used on the Alexandroupolis FSRU?

Not on the strength of an ATEX certificate alone. The unit is a vessel, and equipment carried aboard answers to the flag administration, the classification society and the operator's own marine requirements. If your users work on the vessel, send us the vessel details and we will state what the certification does and does not cover.

Why is a methane site specified to gas group IIC?

A device marked IIC can be used where IIA and IIB atmospheres exist, so one handset serves the whole site, including any hydrogen in laboratories or stores. On a gas terminal the temperature class and the zone usually limit use, not the gas group.

Do DESFA, Gastrade and TAP accept the same documents?

They are three separate companies, each with its own HSE rules, contractor onboarding and procurement. Ask each operator's procurement and HSE teams what they require from an equipment supplier; expect certificate references, the full marking string, the declaration of conformity and the repair route.

Will it work at a remote valve station with no mobile coverage?

The handset's GNSS, camera and installed applications do not need coverage to record a visit. Later synchronisation depends on your inspection application and management console, so a short trial on a real round says more than a datasheet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch; any trial would follow certification.
