Explosion proof phone for Greece, ATEX Zone 1 and Zone 21

The IS-04Z1 is an intrinsically safe Android handset designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21, built for refinery rounds in the Attica heat, gas terminal work at Revithoussa and Alexandroupolis, and the cargo and bunker operations that run out of Piraeus. It is pre-launch: the ATEX programme is under way, and Greek operators, yards and contractors can read the evidence and put a unit to work while it runs.

Where it works in Greece

The classified estate here is unusually coastal. Four refineries sit within sight of salt water, at Aspropyrgos and Elefsina in the Thriasio plain, at Agioi Theodoroi on the Corinthian Gulf and outside Thessaloniki in the north. Gas import runs through the Revithoussa terminal in the Gulf of Megara and the floating regasification unit at Alexandroupolis, which began commercial operation in October 2024 and has been stepping its capacity up since. Around all of it lies the maritime layer: Piraeus, the Perama repair zone, the Elefsina yards and a bunker trade that serves vessels with no other reason to stop in Greece.

Operators and contractors such as HELLENiQ ENERGY, Motor Oil Hellas and DESFA need an explosion proof mobile phone they can carry into classified areas at Aspropyrgos, Elefsina and Agioi Theodoroi. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty there.

Built for local conditions

Built for Greek operating conditions

The points below answer what Greece actually does to a handheld device over a working year, rather than what looks good in a table of specifications.

For evaluators in Greece, the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone is designed around these points: Summer ambient, not laboratory ambient; Salt, spray and wash-down; Gas and dust in one certification programme; A shift that never passes a charger; Greek on the screen and in the file; Contractor turnover through one gate.

IP ratingIP68
Battery4,000 mAh

OSAndroid 16

Summer ambient, not laboratory ambient

A tank farm in Attica in August is the hardest test a device here will meet, and it is a temperature class question as much as a comfort one. The certified ambient range and the T4 target are published with the datasheet rather than asserted in advance, because a device that quietly derates in the heat is a device that gets left in the control room.

Salt, spray and wash-down

Almost every classified site in Greece is within a few hundred metres of the sea. IP68 sealing and rugged build are aimed at driven spray, salt-laden air and routine cleaning, which is a different duty cycle from the fine dust that dominates inland plants elsewhere.

Gas and dust in one certification programme

The gas marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, and Zone 21 dust protection sits inside the same programme. Alumina handling, coke areas and grain and cement terminals put a dust zone next to a gas zone often enough here that carrying two devices is a habit worth ending.

A shift that never passes a charger

There is no charging point inside a classified area, and on a jetty or a remote gas station the walk to one is measured in gates rather than metres. The 4,000 mAh cell is sized for a full round with the camera and a work order application in use.

Greek on the screen and in the file

Android 16 carries a Greek interface, and the manual, the safe-use instructions and the declaration of conformity are produced in Greek alongside English. The marking string and temperature class are supplied in a form an assessor can paste straight into the explosion protection document.

Contractor turnover through one gate

Turnarounds here are staffed by rotating contractor crews. 4G LTE, Wi-Fi and NFC let a single handset work on the plant network, on site Wi-Fi and against access control, while Android 16 with EMM and MDM allows enrolment, restriction, wiping and reissue as crews change.

Approvals in Greece

Certification programme ahead of Q4 2026 launch.

ATEX is the complete product-side requirement here and Greece bolts no national Ex scheme on to it. A Greek review turns instead on two questions: whether the explosion protection document the employer must hold can quote your marking string as it stands, and whether the job is ashore at all, because a bunker barge or a tanker deck answers to the ship's flag and class society rather than to a plant file.

What your HSE and procurement teams will ask for.

On the product side the Greek position is simple and worth stating plainly, because buyers often expect a national hurdle that does not exist. ATEX 2014/34/EU applies in Greece as harmonised European law, transposed into national legislation, and a notified body certificate together with the EU declaration of conformity and CE marking is the whole basis for placing an explosion protected handset on the Greek market. There is no separate Greek Ex approval, no local re-testing and no registration step afterwards. The radio side runs under the Radio Equipment Directive, with EETT, the Hellenic Telecommunications and Post Commission, as the national authority for radio spectrum and equipment matters. Market surveillance for industrial products sits with the ministry responsible for industry and its inspection services. What none of that removes is the need for documentation a Greek site can actually read, and in practice a supplier who cannot produce Greek-language instructions is asked to fix that before anything else is discussed.

The obligations that decide the purchase belong to the employer, and they come from the workplace side of the ATEX regime, directive 1999/92/EC as brought into Greek law. The employer classifies the hazardous areas, assesses the ignition sources and records the equipment selection in an explosion protection document, the engrafo prostasias apo ekrixeis, which has to be kept current and produced on request. Enforcement sits with the Labour Inspectorate, which was re-established as an independent authority by Law 4808/2021 and now inspects health and safety conditions with operational independence from the ministry. Two Greek particulars are worth flagging early in an internal review. Major hazard sites also fall under the Seveso regime, so the same equipment file can be read by more than one inspecting body. And anything used on board a vessel, on a bunker barge or during a tank entry at a repair yard is governed by the flag administration and the classification society rather than by a shore explosion protection document, which is a separate acceptance route and one we will tell you about rather than blur.

Use cases · Greece

Where the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone goes to work.

Typical Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty for the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone in Greece includes: A summer turnaround in the Thriasio plain; Jetty and regasification rounds; Bunker transfer alongside at Piraeus; Dust areas in an alumina and aluminium plant.

Refining01

A summer turnaround in the Thriasio plain

A stop at Aspropyrgos or Elefsina fills the site with outside crews at the hottest time of the year, with the permit desk a long walk from the units. A Zone 1 handset enrolled in the site console keeps the permit, the isolation photograph and the sign-off in one system, so a supervisor can clear a line without crossing the plant twice to do it.

LNG and gas02

Jetty and regasification rounds

Revithoussa and the Alexandroupolis unit are worked by small crews doing long outdoor rounds, often at the far end of a jetty or on a mooring where the nearest colleague is a radio call away. Equipment there has to keep a position fix and a link where the site network thins out, and to survive being handled in spray.

Ports and bunkering03

Bunker transfer alongside at Piraeus

Bunkering puts a supplier crew, a ship crew and a surveyor around the same manifold in a vapour zone, with paperwork that has to be right the first time. One device that can photograph a connection, read a tag and reach the office removes the trip back up the gangway, provided the marine acceptance route has been settled beforehand.

Metals and bulk handling04

Dust areas in an alumina and aluminium plant

Alumina handling, conveyors and silo areas in Viotia create Zone 21 and Zone 22 dust areas alongside fuel gas systems and casting operations. One handset covering both gas and dust classifications ends the practice of leaving a phone at a boundary, which is the point at which people stop carrying one at all.

How to buy · Greece

How to evaluate and buy in Greece

Nothing on this page asks for an order, because the device has not launched. The sequence below is arranged so your internal approval work and our certification programme advance at the same time instead of queuing behind one another.

  1. 01

Send the zoning and the site type

Tell us the zones, the gas or dust group and the temperature class from your classification drawings, whether the users are plant staff, contractors or ship crews, and roughly how many handsets a site would carry. Enquiries reach SAMS Mobile at info@sams-mobile.com.

  2. 02

Take the datasheet and the certificate schedule

You receive the specification, the target marking string and a written status for every certification in progress. That is enough for a technical safety officer to draft the equipment selection entry and for procurement to open a supplier file before anything is issued.

  3. 03

Run a unit through a Greek working week

Evaluation units are placed with Greek operators, yards and contractors under a trial agreement. A useful trial here covers enrolment in your own management console, an afternoon round in full summer conditions, use through gloves, coverage at the far end of a jetty and a full shift with the camera in service.

  4. 04

Agree the supply and support route

On completion of certification, supply runs through a Greek distribution partner or direct where a customer prefers that, with the documentation set a tender requires. Pre-launch pricing is quoted on request against a defined quantity, configuration and support scope.

Questions · Greece

Frequently asked questions

Asking about a site in Greece?

Send your site, zone and gas group, and we will answer for your plant rather than in general.

Ask about Greece →
Is the IS-04Z1 already ATEX certified for use in Greece?

No. It is designed to ATEX 2014/34/EU for Zone 1 and Zone 21 and the certification programme is in progress, with launch planned for Q4 2026. Nothing is supplied for use in a classified area before the certificate covering that use exists, and any supplier telling you otherwise about an unlaunched handset is worth checking carefully.

What does an explosion proof mobile phone cost in Greece?

There is no list price before launch, and we will not publish one for a device whose certificate has not been issued. Pre-launch pricing is quoted in writing against a stated quantity, configuration and support scope, so a tender team can cite it. Evaluation units go out under a trial agreement rather than being sold.

Does Greece require a national approval on top of ATEX?

No. ATEX 2014/34/EU applies as harmonised European law and a notified body certificate with the EU declaration of conformity and CE marking is the complete product-side requirement. There is no additional Greek Ex scheme, no local re-testing and no registration. The duties that follow are the employer's, under the workplace side of the same regime.

Can it be used on board a ship or a bunker barge?

That is a different acceptance route and we will not blur the two. A shore ATEX certificate governs equipment in a classified area on land. Equipment carried aboard a vessel answers to the flag administration and the classification society, and some operators require a separate marine assessment. Tell us the vessel type and flag and we will state exactly what the certification does and does not cover.

Will there be Greek documentation and a Greek interface?

Yes. Android 16 carries a Greek interface, and the manual, the safe-use instructions and the declaration of conformity are produced in Greek alongside English. The marking string, gas group and temperature class are given in a form your explosion protection document can quote without rewriting.

How does it cope with Greek summer temperatures?

Ambient temperature is a certification parameter, not a marketing one. The device is designed to IP68 and a rugged build, and the certified ambient range is published with the datasheet when the certificate is issued. If your classification drawings set a demanding surface temperature limit, send them and we will answer against the number rather than around it.

Who inspects our explosion protection document?

The Labour Inspectorate, which Law 4808/2021 re-established as an independent authority with operational independence. Major hazard establishments are also within the Seveso regime, so the same equipment file may be read by more than one body. That is precisely why the certificate reference and the full marking string, rather than a description of the device, are what we supply.

How will repair and battery replacement be handled?

Through a controlled route. Work on an intrinsically safe device has to be done by a facility recognised for the purpose, because opening it in a general phone workshop destroys the protection concept the certificate rests on. The Greek service and battery arrangement is set out as part of the launch programme and can be reviewed before it is published.
