Gas and dust in one handset
The target gas marking is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, and dust protection for Zone 21 belongs to the same certification programme, so a solvent hall and a powder area need not call for two phones.
The IS-04Z1 is an eigensicheres Smartphone designed to ATEX 2014/34/EU for Zone 1 and Zone 21, built for the chemical parks, refineries and pharmaceutical plants where most German Ex-Schutz work happens. It is pre-launch: certification is running, and German teams can read the documentation and test a unit while it does. Often searched for as an “explosion proof phone”, the IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety as its protection concept.
Launching Q4 2026 · ATEX 2014/34/EU certification programme in progress
German classified-area work sits in integrated chemical sites rather than oilfields. One Verbund site can hold hundreds of plants and a contractor population that turns over every few weeks, and an ordinary shift crosses Zone 1 and Zone 21 boundaries several times. Refining, pharmaceutical production and newer gas infrastructure add the rest.
Operators and contractors such as BASF, Currenta and Evonik need an explosion proof mobile phone they can carry into classified areas at Ludwigshafen, Leverkusen and Marl. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty there.
Ex-Schutz here usually means gas and dust in one building. These are the points a German evaluation puts to the test.
For evaluators in Germany, the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone is designed around these points: Gas and dust in one handset; Cleaning regimes; Coverage across a large site; A full shift; Findings recorded on the spot; Configurable to the agreement.
The target gas marking is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, and dust protection for Zone 21 belongs to the same certification programme, so a solvent hall and a powder area need not call for two phones.
IP68 sealing and rugged build are aimed at the wash-down and vapour of a pharmaceutical or fine-chemical plant, not only at outdoor weather.
4G LTE, Wi-Fi and NFC let one handset move between the plant network, the site network and access control without a second device in the other pocket.
The 4,000 mAh battery is sized for a whole shift with the camera and a site application open, which matters when the nearest charger is outside the zone and behind a gate.
A 50 MP camera with PDAF gives images precise enough for an inspection record or a Freigabe, so a defect is documented at the plant, not described later from memory.
Android 16 supports EMM and MDM, so the handset can be locked to exactly what the Betriebsvereinbarung allows, which is usually the condition attached to approval.
ATEX is the whole product-side requirement here and nothing national follows it. The obligations that do follow sit with the operator under BetrSichV, and that is where a German evaluation concentrates.
On the product side Germany is refreshingly short. ATEX 2014/34/EU is the legal basis, implemented nationally through the Produktsicherheitsgesetz and its eleventh ordinance, the 11. ProdSV. A notified body issues the certificate, and buyers here expect a familiar name on it: PTB, DEKRA or TÜV. Once that certificate and the EU declaration of conformity exist, no further national product approval is needed, and the radio side runs under RED 2014/53/EU with market surveillance by the Bundesnetzagentur.
The operator side is stricter than in most markets. BetrSichV requires an Explosionsschutzdokument for every workplace with an explosive atmosphere, and TRBS 2152 sets out the zone classification and equipment selection reasoning it must contain. Procurement will ask for the certificate number, the full marking string and a German-language declaration of conformity and manual, then keep all three on file. Equipment arriving with English documentation only does not clear the evaluation.
Typical Zone 1 and Zone 21 duty for the IS-04Z1 explosion proof mobile phone in Germany includes: Shift handover inside a Verbund site; Stillstand work with external contractors; Solvent and powder areas in one building; New gas infrastructure, small teams.
At Ludwigshafen or a Chempark site the distance from a plant to the shift office is measured in kilometres. A Zone 1 handset lets the operator log a reading, photograph a weeping flange and hand the shift over from the plant, with the site emergency number in the same pocket.
A German turnaround brings hundreds of Fremdfirmen through the gate for a few weeks. When each crew carries a hazardous-area handset enrolled in the site MDM, the job pack, the Freigabe and the photographic record stay in one system rather than leaving in a folder.
Pharmaceutical and fine-chemical production often puts a Zone 1 solvent area and a Zone 21 dust area a few metres apart. One device covering both zones ends the routine of leaving a phone at one boundary and collecting another at the next.
The LNG import terminals at Wilhelmshaven and Brunsbüttel, the biogas plants and the hydrogen projects at Lingen and in the Ruhr are recently classified areas run by small crews. They need equipment that works on the jetty, at the compressor and on the walk between them.
The device has not launched. What a German team can do today is read the documentation, test a unit and have the paperwork prepared for the day the certificate is issued.
Give us the zones, the temperature class and the gas or dust group from your Explosionsschutzdokument, plus how many users you expect. Enquiries reach SAMS Mobile at info@sams-mobile.com.
You receive the datasheet, the status of each certification and the target marking string, enough to begin the equipment selection entry in your Ex-Schutz file.
Evaluation units go to German operators and contractors under a trial agreement. A typical test covers MDM enrolment, behaviour on the site network, the cleaning routine and a full shift in the plant.
On completion of certification, supply runs through a German or DACH distribution partner, or direct where a customer prefers that. Pre-launch pricing is quoted on request.
Send your site, zone and gas group, and we will answer for your plant rather than in general.
Ask about Germany →No. It is designed to ATEX 2014/34/EU for Zone 1 and Zone 21 and certification is in progress. Launch is planned for Q4 2026, and nothing is supplied for use in a classified area before the certificate exists.
No. ATEX 2014/34/EU, implemented through the Produktsicherheitsgesetz and the 11. ProdSV, is the complete product-side requirement, and there is no separate German approval for Ex equipment. The duties that follow belong to the operator, under BetrSichV and the TRBS rules.
Yes. The declaration of conformity and the manual are produced in German for this market alongside English. German buyers treat that as a condition of acceptance, so it is planned into the launch rather than added afterwards.
Group IIC is the target, and IIC is the group that includes hydrogen. That is deliberate: German operators are adding electrolysers and hydrogen lines to existing sites, and handheld equipment that stops at IIB starts to look short-lived.
Through configuration rather than assurances. Android 16 supports EMM and MDM, so location services, the camera and individual applications can be set to what the works council agreement permits, and that can be demonstrated during the evaluation.
No published price before launch. Pre-launch pricing is quoted against a defined quantity and configuration, and delivery follows the certificate rather than an order date. Evaluation units are issued under a trial agreement rather than sold.
Tell us the site, the zone and gas group, and roughly how many handsets. The SAMS team replies by email with the datasheet and the certification schedule for Germany. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and certification is in progress, so there is no list price yet; indicative pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
We are looking for technical wholesalers and safety distributors who already supply the chemical parks, refineries and pharmaceutical sites, hold the service capability Ex equipment needs, and can carry German-language documentation. Tell us which accounts you serve.
