Coastal climate
The site is coastal, hot and humid, so corrosion and dust are routine concerns for portable electronics.
Bapco oil storage reservoirs are in the south of the island, and Sitra is the terminus of a 42 km pipeline linking it to Dhahran in Saudi Arabia. It hosts the Bapco Sitra refinery, whose $7 billion modernisation was inaugurated in December 2024, and the GARMCO aluminium rolling mill, so refinery and heavy-industry hazardous areas are present. If you are specifying a rugged mobile phone for Sitra, Bahrain, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Sitra, Bahrain: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.
| Check | What to look for | IS-04Z1 today |
|---|---|---|
| Ingress protection | IP65 to IP68 sealing | IP68 design |
| Drop and shock | A stated drop height onto concrete | Specification on request |
| Explosion protection | A separate certificate and marking | In progress; not issued |

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Sitra. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
Who operates there and which kinds of classified area a handset would meet, from the SAMS site research.
The site is coastal, hot and humid, so corrosion and dust are routine concerns for portable electronics.
The modernised refinery is ramping up towards about 405,000 barrels a day, and contractors were still completing final units into late 2025 and early 2026.
East Sitra City, a reclamation project off the eastern coast, increased the island's size by about 50 percent and hosts new residential development.
Construction work on an upgrade of Bapco's Sitra refinery started in March 2019, including a new resid hydrocracking unit planned to be operational by 2023.
Sitra handles Bahrain's whole petroleum output and hosts the Port of Sitra.
The first oil infrastructure on Sitra was built in 1934 by Bapco, including a draw bridge connecting the island to Bahrain Island.
A rugged phone is built to survive water, dust, drops and rough handling, usually rated by an IP code and a drop specification. Ruggedness is an environmental property: it says nothing about whether a phone may be used where flammable gas or dust is present. That is decided by explosion-protection certification and marking.
The IS-04Z1 combines both: an IP68 sealed rugged build and a design for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4). The explosion-protection certificates are in progress and none has been issued.
In Sitra, Bahrain. Sitra is coastal, hot and humid, so corrosion and dust are routine concerns for portable electronics. The IP68 rating is a good start for resisting dust and water on the refinery apron, but it is separate from explosion protection. Rinse and inspect seals as part of normal handset care.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
It is designed to IP68 sealing, with glove-friendly controls. Ruggedness is not explosion protection: that depends on the certificates, which are in progress.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, crude and product storage, hydrogen and hydrocracking units, sulphur recovery units. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Construction of a refinery upgrade began in March 2019 and included a new resid hydrocracking unit planned for operation by 2023. Confirm the current project and commissioning status with Bapco.
Mainly the Bapco refinery and storage reservoirs, with process units, tank farms and loading facilities, plus the port. The extrusion and other light industry may have limited zones. Ask each operator for its classification drawing.
It can, because hydrogen units sit in the most demanding gas group, so the marking must cover that group. Sitra has hydrogen and hydrocracking units. Ask the operator for the classification of each unit and compare it with the device label rather than assuming one marking fits the whole refinery.
