Procurement base
Aramco's Dhahran office is responsible for registering companies located in Saudi Arabia, and also those in the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Iraq, Jordan, Syria, Egypt and Lebanon.
A large part of the city is gated, including Aramco's headquarters and residential camp, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals and the King Abdulaziz Air Base, so entry rules differ by compound. It is an administrative and engineering centre; the classified areas it serves are at oil and gas facilities elsewhere in the Eastern Province. If you are specifying a rugged mobile phone for Dhahran, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Dhahran: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Dhahran. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The companies on site and the hazardous-area types a handset is likely to meet there.
Aramco's Dhahran office is responsible for registering companies located in Saudi Arabia, and also those in the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Iraq, Jordan, Syria, Egypt and Lebanon.
Aramco's headquarters and the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals are here, so engineering and procurement decisions are concentrated in the city.
Bahrain is about 32 km east of Khobar across the King Fahd Causeway, so teams working in both countries can base themselves in the Dammam area.
Dhahran Techno Valley hosts more than 20 multinational research centres and 65 deep-tech start-ups beside KFUPM, so pilot trials of new field equipment can be run close to the energy companies.
Dammam Well No. 7, the first commercially viable well in Saudi Arabia, was drilled on the rocky hills here in the 1930s and was still producing about 70 years later.
Saudi Arabia's Communications, Space and Technology Commission, based in Riyadh, handles radio type approval; certificates are renewed every two years and European documents are accepted.
A rugged phone is built to survive water, dust, drops and rough handling, usually rated by an IP code and a drop specification. Ruggedness is an environmental property: it says nothing about whether a phone may be used where flammable gas or dust is present. That is decided by explosion-protection certification and marking.
The IS-04Z1 combines both: an IP68 sealed rugged build and a design for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4). The explosion-protection certificates are in progress and none has been issued.
In Dhahran. Summers in Dhahran are among the hottest and most humid in the region, with a recorded high of 51.1 C. Heat and humidity are a concern for any electronics left in vehicles. IP68 on the IS-04Z1 addresses ingress, not ignition, and the datasheet temperature range still has to be checked.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
It is designed to IP68 sealing, with glove-friendly controls. Ruggedness is not explosion protection: that depends on the certificates, which are in progress.
Likely candidates are oil and gas facilities served from dhahran, fuel storage and handling. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Generally no. Much of Dhahran is gated, including the Aramco headquarters, residential camp, the university and the air base. Access is controlled by each compound, so arrange a host, a visitor pass and any required induction through your client before travelling.
Dhahran Techno Valley, next to KFUPM, hosts research centres and start-ups and pilots technology alongside large energy companies. Whether a particular trial is possible depends on the host organisation and its safety approvals, so contact them directly.
Not for ordinary office work, since Dhahran is mainly an administrative centre. The need arises when staff visit oil and gas facilities elsewhere in the Eastern Province, or handle fuel storage. Check the area classification for the place the device will be used, not for the city where it is bought.
