Procurement base
Aramco's Dhahran office is responsible for registering companies located in Saudi Arabia, and also those in the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Iraq, Jordan, Syria, Egypt and Lebanon.
KFUPM supplies a talent base of more than 13,000 students and 800 researchers and professors, which supports a deep local pool of petroleum and engineering graduates. It is an administrative and engineering centre; the classified areas it serves are at oil and gas facilities elsewhere in the Eastern Province. An explosion proof mobile phone distributor in Dhahran would carry the IS-04Z1 to these buyers once certification completes.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Dhahran. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

Aramco's Dhahran office is responsible for registering companies located in Saudi Arabia, and also those in the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Iraq, Jordan, Syria, Egypt and Lebanon.
Aramco's headquarters and the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals are here, so engineering and procurement decisions are concentrated in the city.
A large part of the city is gated, including Aramco's headquarters and residential camp, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals and the King Abdulaziz Air Base, so entry rules differ by compound.
Bahrain is about 32 km east of Khobar across the King Fahd Causeway, so teams working in both countries can base themselves in the Dammam area.
Dhahran Techno Valley hosts more than 20 multinational research centres and 65 deep-tech start-ups beside KFUPM, so pilot trials of new field equipment can be run close to the energy companies.
Dammam Well No. 7, the first commercially viable well in Saudi Arabia, was drilled on the rocky hills here in the 1930s and was still producing about 70 years later.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Dhahran. Dhahran is an administrative centre, so most explosion-proof questions here concern equipment destined for oil and gas facilities elsewhere in the Eastern Province. The useful distinction is between flameproof Ex d enclosures for fixed gear and intrinsic safety for handhelds. The IS-04Z1 is designed for intrinsic safety.
A distributor for Dhahran would carry the IS-04Z1 after certification completes; the Q4 2026 launch is the planning date and no appointment has been made. SAMS reviews applicants one by one and prefers companies with their own Ex-competent technical and service staff, since certified devices must not be repaired outside approved channels.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
Likely candidates are oil and gas facilities served from dhahran, fuel storage and handling. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Dhahran.
Mostly no. It is an administrative and engineering centre, with Aramco's headquarters and research facilities, while the classified areas it serves are at oil, gas and refining sites elsewhere in the Eastern Province. Buyers and specifiers are based in Dhahran even when the Zone 1 work is not.
Often yes. Bahrain is about 32 km east of Khobar across the King Fahd Causeway, so Dhahran-based teams can reach it by road. Border formalities, equipment import rules and site approvals still apply to each country, so plan them in advance.
Aramco's Dhahran office handles registration of in-Kingdom suppliers, and registration normally runs through Aramco's e-Marketplace Platform with technical and financial qualification. Rules change, so ask Aramco or the contractor for current requirements. This is a commercial step and does not replace explosion-protection certification.
