KNPC: industry on the ground
Mina Abdullah refines about 280,000 barrels a day, while Mina Al-Ahmadi has a published capacity of roughly 346,000 to 466,000 barrels a day, so both operating refineries are very large process sites.
KNPC is the downstream arm of Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, covering refining, gas processing and local marketing of petroleum products. Mina Al-Ahmadi covers about 10.5 million square metres, 40 km south of Kuwait City, and Mina Abdullah about 7.8 million square metres, 46 km south, so both are very large sites. This page sets out how an intrinsically safe smartphone supply route to KNPC will work for the IS-04Z1, and what is and is not available before launch.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. An intrinsically safe smartphone for KNPC cannot be bought yet: the SAMS IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued), and the datasheet, certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Kuwait. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The main sites and the hazardous-area types a portable device is likely to meet at this organisation.
Supplier registration and equipment approval are run by the organisation itself; confirm current requirements with its procurement and HSE teams. The Ex certificate and an organisation's own vendor or engineering approval are two separate timelines; SAMS is working towards both and holds neither today.
Mina Abdullah refines about 280,000 barrels a day, while Mina Al-Ahmadi has a published capacity of roughly 346,000 to 466,000 barrels a day, so both operating refineries are very large process sites.
Mina Al-Ahmadi dates from 1949 and Mina Abdullah was built in 1958, so equipment and layouts range from original plant to recent upgrades.
KNPC sponsors a refinery-operations specialisation at the College of Technological Studies of the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training, creating a local technician pool.
Kuwait's communications regulator, CITRA, extended type approval validity from one to three years, with renewal timing set in advance, so handset certificates need diary control.
Intrinsic safety limits the electrical and thermal energy in a circuit so that neither a spark nor a hot surface can ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even when a fault occurs. The ib level, used for Zone 1, tolerates one fault. It is the usual way to make a handheld device that a worker carries continuously through a hazardous area.
The IS-04Z1 is designed on this principle for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4). Intrinsic safety is a design basis, not a certificate: certification is in progress and none has been issued yet.
In KNPC. Operators at Mina Al-Ahmadi and Mina Abdullah patrol process units, tank farms and loading areas that are far apart. A handheld intrinsically safe phone allows tag scanning, photographs and defect reports from inside the classified area. During turnarounds it would help crews retrieve drawings and send photographs close to live equipment.
Nothing can be bought for KNPC today: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch, and SAMS will supply end users through authorised distributors once certificates exist. What a buyer can do now is take the specification, ask for the written certification schedule and arrange a safe-area evaluation, so that the right local channel contacts you at launch.
The technical specification, marking target and conditions of use, sent by email.
Which certificates are in progress, in what order, and what is still to be confirmed.
Evaluation units can be used for connectivity, MDM enrolment and workflow testing outside classified areas.
Tell us the site, zone, gas group and quantity so the right authorised distributor can contact you.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
The circuits are designed to limit energy so a spark or hot surface cannot ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even with one fault (level ib, Zone 1). Certification of that design is in progress.
Supplier registration and equipment approval are run by the organisation itself; confirm current requirements with its procurement and HSE teams.
Through authorised distributors once certificates exist. Until then SAMS can send the datasheet and certification schedule and arrange safe-area evaluation units.
Mina Al-Ahmadi covers about 10.5 million square metres and Mina Abdullah about 7.8 million, located 40 km and 46 km south of Kuwait City. Distances inside the sites are long, so plan for vehicle transport, battery capacity and gate times.
Typically yes. KNPC runs its own vendor registration, safety procedures and equipment approvals for contractors, and these may differ between refineries. Confirm current requirements with its procurement and HSE teams, and also check the CITRA type-approval status of any radio device.
The merger is reported near completion, with Al-Zour joining KNPC, so the final legal entity should be checked. Equipment approval is run by the organisation itself, through its procurement and HSE teams. Ask them for current requirements. The IS-04Z1 has no certificate yet.
