KNPC: projects and investment
Ultra-low-sulphur diesel production began at Mina Al-Ahmadi in 2014, so desulphurisation capacity is part of the refinery process mix.
KNPC sponsors a refinery-operations specialisation at the College of Technological Studies of the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training, creating a local technician pool. In mid-2026 KPC marked the merger of KIPIC into KNPC, so the Al-Zour refinery (615,000 barrels a day) now sits alongside Mina Al-Ahmadi and Mina Abdullah, for combined capacity of 1.415 million barrels a day. Buyers searching for an explosion proof mobile phone supplier for KNPC can take the datasheet and the certification schedule for the IS-04Z1 now; supply follows certification.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. An explosion proof mobile phone for KNPC cannot be bought yet: the SAMS IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued), and the datasheet, certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Kuwait. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The main sites and the hazardous-area types a portable device is likely to meet at this organisation.
Supplier registration and equipment approval are run by the organisation itself; confirm current requirements with its procurement and HSE teams. The Ex certificate and an organisation's own vendor or engineering approval are two separate timelines; SAMS is working towards both and holds neither today.
Ultra-low-sulphur diesel production began at Mina Al-Ahmadi in 2014, so desulphurisation capacity is part of the refinery process mix.
Mina Abdullah refines about 280,000 barrels a day, while Mina Al-Ahmadi has a published capacity of roughly 346,000 to 466,000 barrels a day, so both operating refineries are very large process sites.
Mina Al-Ahmadi dates from 1949 and Mina Abdullah was built in 1958, so equipment and layouts range from original plant to recent upgrades.
Mina Al-Ahmadi covers about 10.5 million square metres, 40 km south of Kuwait City, and Mina Abdullah about 7.8 million square metres, 46 km south, so both are very large sites.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In KNPC. In a Kuwaiti refinery explosion-proof is everyday shorthand for different concepts. Flameproof Ex d protects fixed motors and enclosures in process units, while intrinsic safety suits portable devices. For a phone carried around tank farms or LPG plants, the relevant concept is intrinsic safety, which is what the IS-04Z1 is designed around.
There is no stock to order for KNPC yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch, certification is in progress, and supply will run through authorised distributors after the certificates are issued. Procurement teams can prepare now with the datasheet, the certification schedule and a safe-area evaluation.

Which certificates are in progress, in what order, and what is still to be confirmed.
Evaluation units can be used for connectivity, MDM enrolment and workflow testing outside classified areas.

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
Supplier registration and equipment approval are run by the organisation itself; confirm current requirements with its procurement and HSE teams.
Through authorised distributors once certificates exist. Until then SAMS can send the datasheet and certification schedule and arrange safe-area evaluation units.
Mina Al-Ahmadi covers about 10.5 million square metres and Mina Abdullah about 7.8 million, located 40 km and 46 km south of Kuwait City. Distances inside the sites are long, so plan for vehicle transport, battery capacity and gate times.
Typically yes. KNPC runs its own vendor registration, safety procedures and equipment approvals for contractors, and these may differ between refineries. Confirm current requirements with its procurement and HSE teams, and also check the CITRA type-approval status of any radio device.
The merger is reported near completion, with Al-Zour joining KNPC, so the final legal entity should be checked. Equipment approval is run by the organisation itself, through its procurement and HSE teams. Ask them for current requirements. The IS-04Z1 has no certificate yet.
