KNPC: people and language
KNPC sponsors a refinery-operations specialisation at the College of Technological Studies of the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training, creating a local technician pool.
KNPC is the downstream arm of Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, covering refining, gas processing and local marketing of petroleum products. Mina Abdullah refines about 280,000 barrels a day, while Mina Al-Ahmadi has a published capacity of roughly 346,000 to 466,000 barrels a day, so both operating refineries are very large process sites. This page explains what to look for in an explosion proof mobile phone for KNPC, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for KNPC: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Kuwait. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The main sites and the hazardous-area types a portable device is likely to meet at this organisation.
Supplier registration and equipment approval are run by the organisation itself; confirm current requirements with its procurement and HSE teams. The Ex certificate and an organisation's own vendor or engineering approval are two separate timelines; SAMS is working towards both and holds neither today.

Kuwait's communications regulator, CITRA, extended type approval validity from one to three years, with renewal timing set in advance, so handset certificates need diary control.
The Shuaiba refinery, built in 1966 as the first refinery in the region built by a national company, was shut in March 2017 so its facilities could be reused for the Clean Fuels Project.
KNPC was established in October 1960, became fully government-owned in 1975 and was placed under Kuwait Petroleum Corporation in 1980, so its refineries have a long operating history.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In KNPC. In a Kuwaiti refinery explosion-proof is everyday shorthand for different concepts. Flameproof Ex d protects fixed motors and enclosures in process units, while intrinsic safety suits portable devices. For a phone carried around tank farms or LPG plants, the relevant concept is intrinsic safety, which is what the IS-04Z1 is designed around.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
Supplier registration and equipment approval are run by the organisation itself; confirm current requirements with its procurement and HSE teams.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Mina Al-Ahmadi was first built in 1949 and Mina Abdullah in 1958, and both have been upgraded, including ultra-low-sulphur diesel production from 2014. Older and newer areas can have different classification and equipment requirements, so request the current area classification drawings.
It was shut in March 2017 so that its facilities could be repurposed for the Clean Fuels Project. Shuaiba is therefore mainly a decommissioning and conversion site, while active refining work is concentrated at Mina Al-Ahmadi, Mina Abdullah and Al-Zour; check current status with KNPC.
Only if its protection suits the zone and gas group in the operator's drawings. A device designed around intrinsic safety would be assessed against them, and LPG and fuel vapours call for the right group. The IS-04Z1 target is IIC, but certification is in progress. Ask KNPC's HSE team first.
