Sembcorp Marine and Keppel Offshore & Marine combined as Seatrium in 2023.
Singapore's major shipyards are run by Seatrium, with yards at Admiralty, Benoi, Pioneer, Tuas and Tuas Boulevard, and by ST Engineering. Repair, conversion and newbuild work brings Zone 1 conditions into tanks, cargo spaces and paint areas. This page explains what to look for in an intrinsically safe smartphone for Singapore shipyards, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Singapore shipyards: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Singapore Shipyard. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
Sembcorp Marine and Keppel Offshore & Marine combined as Seatrium in 2023.
Its official contact page lists Admiralty Yard, Benoi Yard, Pioneer Yard, Tuas Yard and Tuas Boulevard Yard in Singapore.
Heat, humidity and frequent heavy showers affect work on open decks, quays and docks all year round.
Seatrium's repair and upgrade work covers LNG and LPG carriers, cruise ships, ferries, floating production vessels, jack-ups, tankers, container ships and heavy-lift vessels.
The Tuas Boulevard Yard has a graving dock about 350 metres long and 66 metres wide, suited to the largest tankers and floating production units.
In 2002 Keppel Shipyard was combined with Keppel FELS and Keppel Singmarine to form the Keppel Offshore and Marine group, which became part of Seatrium in 2023.
Intrinsic safety limits the electrical and thermal energy in a circuit so that neither a spark nor a hot surface can ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even when a fault occurs. The ib level, used for Zone 1, tolerates one fault. It is the usual way to make a handheld device that a worker carries continuously through a hazardous area.
The IS-04Z1 is designed on this principle for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4). Intrinsic safety is a design basis, not a certificate: certification is in progress and none has been issued yet.
In Singapore shipyards. Tank entry follows per-vessel gas-free and permit procedures, so supervisors spend time moving between tanks, dry dock and workshops with checklists and photographs. A handheld intrinsically safe phone is intended for that routine once certified, within the yard's permit rules. Certification is still in progress.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
The circuits are designed to limit energy so a spark or hot surface cannot ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even with one fault (level ib, Zone 1). Certification of that design is in progress.
Likely candidates are vessel tank spaces, dry dock and repair work, paint and coating shops, offshore conversion. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Large graving docks hold very big vessels and many contractors at once, so crowding, crane lifts and hot work overlap. Hazardous-area controls are managed per vessel by the yard's safety team and the owner's representative.
Seatrium's yards at Admiralty, Benoi, Pioneer, Tuas and Tuas Boulevard are the large repair and conversion sites, and other yards operate in the Jurong area. Zone 1 conditions arise inside tanks and pump rooms during repair and coating work.
Not automatically. Tank entry and hot work normally follow per-vessel gas-free and permit procedures set by the yard, and some yards still require certified equipment in certain spaces. The IS-04Z1 has no certificate yet. Ask the yard safety department which rule applies.
