Mesaieed and Ras Laffan are a drive from the capital, so contractors and service teams are often based in Doha.
Doha is Qatar's capital and houses over 40 per cent of the country's population. Qatar's Communications Regulatory Authority in Doha assesses radio equipment under a conformity approach modelled on the European one, so EU documents are normally the starting point for handset approval. An intrinsically safe smartphone distributor in Doha would carry the IS-04Z1 to these buyers once certification completes.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Doha has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Doha. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
Who operates there and which kinds of classified area a handset would meet, from the SAMS site research.
Mesaieed and Ras Laffan are a drive from the capital, so contractors and service teams are often based in Doha.
A significant proportion of residents are expatriates, and a large contractor workforce supports plant maintenance.
Mesaieed and its industrial area are run by Mesaieed Industry City Management, a QatarEnergy subdivision set up in 1996, so site entry rules there come from that body and each tenant.
The Communications Regulatory Authority announced that 3G mobile services in Qatar end by 31 December 2025, so devices used in the field should work on 4G or 5G networks.
Land reclamation has added about 400 hectares to the Doha coast, and half of the 22 square km used for Hamad International Airport is reclaimed land.
Mesaieed began in 1949 as a tanker terminal for oil from Dukhan and was Qatar's only deepwater port for more than 20 years, which is why heavy industry sits south of Doha.
Intrinsic safety limits the electrical and thermal energy in a circuit so that neither a spark nor a hot surface can ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even when a fault occurs. The ib level, used for Zone 1, tolerates one fault. It is the usual way to make a handheld device that a worker carries continuously through a hazardous area.
The IS-04Z1 is designed on this principle for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4). Intrinsic safety is a design basis, not a certificate: certification is in progress and none has been issued yet.
In Doha. Contractors staying in Doha and driving out to the plants make short, scheduled rounds in gas areas. A handheld intrinsically safe handset suits that pattern: it can carry inspection photos, forms and messaging in one device. The IS-04Z1 is designed for Zone 1 use, with a 50 MP camera and a 4,000 mAh battery.
Distribution of the IS-04Z1 is by authorised partners only, and SAMS has not yet granted a territory for Doha. Each application is reviewed on its merits. Because opening a certified Ex handset in an ordinary workshop invalidates its certificate, the partner must be able to support and service the device locally.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
The circuits are designed to limit energy so a spark or hot surface cannot ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even with one fault (level ib, Zone 1). Certification of that design is in progress.
Likely candidates are petrochemical, refinery and fertiliser plants at mesaieed, lng and gas processing at ras laffan, port and fuel storage areas. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Doha.
Mostly outside the city, at Mesaieed to the south and Ras Laffan to the north, plus port and fuel-storage areas. Doha is where most contractors and buyers are based, so purchasing and service happen there while Zone 1 work is at the plants.
No. Qatar's regulator said 3G services would be discontinued by the end of 2025, so devices should support current 4G or 5G bands. Check the operator coverage inside the plant, since some process areas have limited signal.
Equipment approval and vendor registration are run by QatarEnergy and each plant operator, so requirements differ between sites. Radio and telecoms terminals also fall under type approval by the Communications Regulatory Authority. Confirm the current requirements with the site operator before ordering anything for a Qatar plant.
