Large refinery site
The Mina Al-Ahmadi refinery covers about 10.5 square km along the shore and has been upgraded across 39 units.
Al Ahmadi is a town in southern Kuwait founded in 1946 after the discovery of oil, and it is the headquarters of Kuwait Oil Company and Kuwait National Petroleum Company. KNPC's April 2025 merger with KIPIC, announced by Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, reshapes the refining company structure, so supplier registration may be under the merged entity. An intrinsically safe smartphone distributor in Al Ahmadi would carry the IS-04Z1 to these buyers once certification completes.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Al Ahmadi has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Al Ahmadi. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The companies on site and the hazardous-area types a handset is likely to meet there.
The Mina Al-Ahmadi refinery covers about 10.5 square km along the shore and has been upgraded across 39 units.
Summers are very hot and the site is coastal, so heat, dust and humidity all affect outdoor equipment.
Mina Abdullah refinery, built in 1958, is about 46 km south of Kuwait City and is rated at 280,000 barrels a day.
Greater Burgan covers about 1,000 square kilometres and has three producing sub-fields: Burgan itself (500 sq km), Magwa (180) and Ahmadi (140).
Mina Al-Ahmadi began producing ultra-low-sulphur diesel in 2014, and the Shuaiba refinery was shut in 2017 to make way for the Clean Fuels Project.
Burgan's subsurface reservoirs were discovered in February 1938, and Kuwait Oil Company began commercial oil production there in 1946.
Intrinsic safety limits the electrical and thermal energy in a circuit so that neither a spark nor a hot surface can ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even when a fault occurs. The ib level, used for Zone 1, tolerates one fault. It is the usual way to make a handheld device that a worker carries continuously through a hazardous area.
The IS-04Z1 is designed on this principle for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4). Intrinsic safety is a design basis, not a certificate: certification is in progress and none has been issued yet.
In Al Ahmadi. With a refinery covering about 10.5 square km along the shore and 39 upgraded units, inspection and turnaround crews cover long distances between process areas, tanks and marine loading. An intrinsically safe handheld lets them keep one device for photos, permits and reports across those areas. The IS-04Z1 is designed for that, subject to certification.
A distributor for Al Ahmadi would carry the IS-04Z1 after certification completes; the Q4 2026 launch is the planning date and no appointment has been made. SAMS reviews applicants one by one and prefers companies with their own Ex-competent technical and service staff, since certified devices must not be repaired outside approved channels.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
The circuits are designed to limit energy so a spark or hot surface cannot ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even with one fault (level ib, Zone 1). Certification of that design is in progress.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, oil gathering and processing, crude and product storage, marine loading facilities. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Al Ahmadi.
Kuwait Oil Company for field work and KNPC, now merging with KIPIC, for refinery work. Both run their own procurement and HSE approval processes, so ask each for the current procedure.
Summer highs average 42 to 46 degrees Celsius with a national record of 54, so use devices rated for high ambient temperatures and avoid leaving them in vehicles.
KOC and KNPC each run their own supplier registration and prequalification, KOC through its E-Business portal and KNPC through its eSourcing portal. A device supplier normally needs to be registered before it is considered. Confirm current requirements with the operator.
