Coastal desert climate
Summers are very hot and the site is coastal, so heat, dust and humidity all affect outdoor equipment.
Mina Al-Ahmadi began producing ultra-low-sulphur diesel in 2014, and the Shuaiba refinery was shut in 2017 to make way for the Clean Fuels Project. The Greater Burgan field and the Mina Al-Ahmadi refinery, with a stated capacity of 346,000 barrels a day, are close by. This page explains what to look for in a rugged mobile phone for Al Ahmadi, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Al Ahmadi: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Al Ahmadi. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
Summers are very hot and the site is coastal, so heat, dust and humidity all affect outdoor equipment.
The town grew around the oil companies, so operator staff, contractors and service firms are concentrated in a small area.
Mina Abdullah refinery, built in 1958, is about 46 km south of Kuwait City and is rated at 280,000 barrels a day.
Greater Burgan covers about 1,000 square kilometres and has three producing sub-fields: Burgan itself (500 sq km), Magwa (180) and Ahmadi (140).
KNPC's April 2025 merger with KIPIC, announced by Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, reshapes the refining company structure, so supplier registration may be under the merged entity.
Burgan's subsurface reservoirs were discovered in February 1938, and Kuwait Oil Company began commercial oil production there in 1946.
A rugged phone is built to survive water, dust, drops and rough handling, usually rated by an IP code and a drop specification. Ruggedness is an environmental property: it says nothing about whether a phone may be used where flammable gas or dust is present. That is decided by explosion-protection certification and marking.
The IS-04Z1 combines both: an IP68 sealed rugged build and a design for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4). The explosion-protection certificates are in progress and none has been issued.
In Al Ahmadi. The setting is coastal desert, with very hot summers, dust and humidity all affecting outdoor equipment. IP68 is designed to withstand dust and water immersion, which helps with fine dust and coastal moisture, but it does not equal explosion protection. Temperature class and permitted ambient range remain separate checks.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
It is designed to IP68 sealing, with glove-friendly controls. Ruggedness is not explosion protection: that depends on the certificates, which are in progress.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, oil gathering and processing, crude and product storage, marine loading facilities. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Mina Al-Ahmadi occupies about 10.5 square kilometres and is listed at 346,000 to 466,000 barrels a day, while Mina Abdullah is rated at 280,000 barrels a day. Scale means many contractors on site.
Typically oil wells and gathering stations in Greater Burgan, plus refinery process units, tank farms and loading facilities at Mina Al-Ahmadi and the nearby Mina Abdullah refinery. Exact zones are set by each operator's area classification.
Coastal heat, dust and humidity all affect outdoor equipment. IP68 is designed to help with dust and water, but check the certified ambient range and avoid leaving the device in direct sun. Charge only in a safe area. Ask the operator about its device handling rules.
