Access
About 6,000 oil and gas personnel live on the island on a rotational schedule, so access is under operator control.
Das Island lies in the Arabian Gulf about 160 km off the UAE mainland, and ADNOC Gas operates five gas processing trains and three dedicated LNG trains there. Gas processing, storage and tanker loading create classified areas across the island. This page explains what to look for in an intrinsically safe mobile phone for Das Island, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Das Island: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Das Island. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The companies on site and the hazardous-area types a handset is likely to meet there.
About 6,000 oil and gas personnel live on the island on a rotational schedule, so access is under operator control.
Two pipelines of over 200 km, part of the Integrated Gas Development project, link Das Island with the Habshan complex on the mainland.
The island measures only about 1.2 km by 2.4 km, so process plant, accommodation and the airport share very limited space.
Artificial additions to the south in 2016 provided a new runway and new accommodation, and the runway was expanded and relocated in 2018, so parts of the island are recent construction.
LNG trains T1 and T2 started in 1977 and T3 in 1994, with a combined capacity of about 5.7 million tonnes a year, so equipment ranges from older to newer units.
Crude oil and LNG leave by tanker to markets as far away as Japan and Europe, so jetty and loading-arm areas are busy marine work zones.
Intrinsic safety limits the electrical and thermal energy in a circuit so that neither a spark nor a hot surface can ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even when a fault occurs. The ib level, used for Zone 1, tolerates one fault. It is the usual way to make a handheld device that a worker carries continuously through a hazardous area.
The IS-04Z1 is designed on this principle for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4). Intrinsic safety is a design basis, not a certificate: certification is in progress and none has been issued yet.
In Das Island. Rounds on Das Island cover processing trains, LNG trains and loading areas on a compact site with a rotating workforce. A handheld intrinsically safe device would let operators log readings and photograph equipment in Zone 1 spots without carrying a separate terminal, which is the kind of use the IS-04Z1 is designed for.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
The circuits are designed to limit energy so a spark or hot surface cannot ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even with one fault (level ib, Zone 1). Certification of that design is in progress.
Likely candidates are gas processing trains, lng trains, crude and lng tanker loading, pipelines to habshan. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
By air to the island's single airport or by sea, in each case under the operator's control. Heavy equipment normally comes by marine transport, so shipping lead times and customs paperwork should be added to the project schedule; confirm logistics with the operator.
The island is only about 1.2 km by 2.4 km, so process units, accommodation and the runway are close together. That can mean short distances between classified and non-classified areas, so zone boundaries and device-use rules are typically strict and well signposted.
Das Island is hot and humid with salt-laden air, and environmental rules apply because of turtle and seabird breeding. The IS-04Z1 is designed to IP68 and has a 4,000 mAh battery. Salt exposure and heat limits have not been published, so ask for the datasheet.
