North Hub project
Reports describe an FPSO designed for 1 billion standard cubic feet of gas a day, in about 2,000 metres of water, with first steel cut in July 2026 and commercial production targeted for the fourth quarter of 2028.
Indonesia's offshore oil and gas includes the Kutai Basin off East Kalimantan, where the Makassar Strait North Hub project, operated by the Searah venture of Eni and Petronas, is building a floating production unit. Platforms, FPSOs and drilling rigs are classified hazardous areas. If you are specifying an industrial smartphone for Indonesian offshore oil and gas fields, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Indonesian offshore oil and gas fields: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Indonesia Offshore Rigs. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

Crews and equipment move by supply vessel or helicopter, so equipment is normally certified and approved before mobilisation.
The Batam Industrial Development Authority, now BP Batam, was created by a 1973 presidential decree to manage a 415 square kilometre industrial complex for heavy industry, where previously only Pertamina was based.
The Tangguh field in Bintuni Bay, West Papua, has estimated proven gas reserves of 4.4 trillion cubic feet, with annual output hoped to reach about 7.6 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas.
The Masela block, east of Timor island, was described as likely to become Indonesia's biggest deepwater gas project, with over 10 trillion cubic feet of gas and an estimated 14 to 19 billion dollars of investment.
Indonesia was a significant oil exporter in the 1980s, but since 2000 consumption has risen while production has fallen, so offshore and mature-field drilling carries national importance.
“Industrial” describes a phone built for plant conditions: sealed, drop-resistant and manageable at fleet scale through Android Enterprise. It does not by itself mean the phone may enter a classified area. Only a device with a valid explosion-protection certificate and marking may do that.
The IS-04Z1 is designed to be both an industrial Android phone (IP68, 4,000 mAh battery, 50 MP camera, Android 16 with EMM and MDM support) and an intrinsically safe one. Its explosion-protection certificates are in progress and have not been issued.
In Indonesian offshore oil and gas fields. Crews and equipment move by supply vessel or helicopter, so devices are normally certified and approved before mobilisation. A fleet would need MDM or EMM enrolment completed onshore, spares carried offshore, and charging only in safe areas. Satellite or radio links affect updates.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
Yes by design: IP68 sealing, a 4,000 mAh battery, a 50 MP camera and Android 16 with EMM and MDM support. The explosion-protection certificates are separate and still in progress.
Likely candidates are offshore production platforms, fpso process and storage areas, drilling rigs, wellhead areas. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Rigs are normally supplied from shore bases by supply boat or helicopter, so deliveries follow set schedules and weight limits. Plan spare batteries and chargers well ahead, and confirm customs and radio type-approval needs for each landing point.
Rigs typically follow the standards of their flag state or classification society, often IECEx or ATEX based, together with the operator's own rules. Confirm with the rig operator which certification marks it accepts for portable devices and how permits to work are issued.
Crews and equipment move by supply vessel or helicopter, so replacing or approving a device on the platform is slow. Operators therefore expect certification and approval onshore. Ask the operator or its contractor for the approval route. Confirm with them.
