Underground operations
Grasberg has three active underground mines (Grasberg Block Cave, Deep Mill Level Zone and Big Gossan) alongside the former open pit.
Timika, capital of Mimika Regency in Central Papua, is the service base for the Grasberg copper and gold mine run by PT Freeport Indonesia. Early construction included a 116 km road and pipeline, a port, an airstrip, a power plant and a new town, so the operation is largely self-contained and supplied by sea and air. An industrial smartphone distributor in Timika and the Grasberg mining district would carry the IS-04Z1 to these buyers once certification completes.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Timika and the Grasberg mining district has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Timika Mining. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
Who operates there and which kinds of classified area a handset would meet, from the SAMS site research.
Grasberg has three active underground mines (Grasberg Block Cave, Deep Mill Level Zone and Big Gossan) alongside the former open pit.
Timika averages about 5,690 mm of rain a year in a tropical rainforest climate.
PT Freeport Indonesia runs Grasberg, with Indonesian state interests through MIND ID holding 51.23 percent and Freeport-McMoRan 48.77 percent, and mining rights were extended to 2041.
The Grasberg mine lies in Mimika Regency, Central Papua, near Puncak Jaya, and the original mine was built at about 4,100 metres above sea level, with the open pit rim at roughly 4,270 metres.
Mozes Kilangin Airport at Timika has direct domestic flights to Jayapura, Nabire, Sorong, Makassar and Bali, plus short flights to interior districts of Mimika such as Jila, Tsinga and Alama.
Grasberg has a large open pit completed in 2019, three operating underground mines, the Block Cave, Deep Mill Level Zone and Big Gossan, and four concentrators, milling more than 72 million tonnes of ore in 2023.
“Industrial” describes a phone built for plant conditions: sealed, drop-resistant and manageable at fleet scale through Android Enterprise. It does not by itself mean the phone may enter a classified area. Only a device with a valid explosion-protection certificate and marking may do that.
The IS-04Z1 is designed to be both an industrial Android phone (IP68, 4,000 mAh battery, 50 MP camera, Android 16 with EMM and MDM support) and an intrinsically safe one. Its explosion-protection certificates are in progress and have not been issued.
In Timika and the Grasberg mining district. Grasberg works from Timika by air, road and sea over long supply chains, so spares are slow to arrive. A fleet needs MDM or EMM enrolment, spare units on site, safe-area charging and a plan for connectivity underground and across the highlands.
SAMS is appointing authorised distributors ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No territory has been granted for Timika and the Grasberg mining district yet and applications are reviewed company by company. Because a certified Ex device cannot be opened by an ordinary phone workshop without invalidating its certificate, SAMS looks for partners who can provide competent technical support and after-sales service locally.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
Yes by design: IP68 sealing, a 4,000 mAh battery, a 50 MP camera and Android 16 with EMM and MDM support. The explosion-protection certificates are separate and still in progress.
Likely candidates are concentrator and process plant, fuel storage and distribution, concentrate port and dewatering, underground mine areas. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Timika and the Grasberg mining district.
Altitude, heavy rain, long underground haulage and remote supply make it demanding. Underground mines can have gas or dust, and surface plants have flotation chemicals, so confirm area classification with the operator and plan for battery life and spares.
The operation uses its own port at Amamapare, an airstrip and long access roads built for the mine, and Timika is the regional town. Expect long lead times, customs clearance in Indonesia and site security and induction procedures before devices go underground.
Grasberg sits at about 4,100 metres and the region is very wet, so temperature, condensation and battery behaviour matter. Check the rated operating range and sealing. IP68 is not explosion protection. Confirm site requirements with the operator.
