Power plant
Mälarenergi's Västerås plant produces about 700 GWh of electricity and 1,800 GWh of heat a year; Block 6 (2014) burns waste and biofuels and Block 7 (2020) recycled wood.
Västerås is a city on Lake Mälaren, 110 km west of Stockholm, with an industrial base that includes ABB and the Mälarenergi combined heat and power plant. Handling of waste, wood and biomass fuels creates dust and gas areas where Zone 1 and Zone 21 work arises. This page explains what to look for in an industrial mobile phone for Västerås, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Västerås: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Västerås. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
Mälarenergi's Västerås plant produces about 700 GWh of electricity and 1,800 GWh of heat a year; Block 6 (2014) burns waste and biofuels and Block 7 (2020) recycled wood.
Humid continental climate with cold winters and warm summers, so equipment sees a wide temperature range.
The city is one of Sweden's main logistics centres thanks to its position in the Mälardalen region with railways, waterways and highways, and ICA has a main distribution centre there.
Mälarenergi's heat and power plant in Västerås is Sweden's largest combined heat and power plant, and its newest unit, number 6, burns waste as fuel.
ABB's Swedish headquarters is in Västerås, where it produces robots, drive systems and high-voltage equipment, after the electrical manufacturer ASEA concentrated its operations there following early electrification in 1891.
Westinghouse Sweden produces nuclear fuel and offers services for boiling water and pressurised water reactors from an industrial area in northern Västerås, with more than 1,000 employees in 2014.
“Industrial” describes a phone built for plant conditions: sealed, drop-resistant and manageable at fleet scale through Android Enterprise. It does not by itself mean the phone may enter a classified area. Only a device with a valid explosion-protection certificate and marking may do that.
The IS-04Z1 is designed to be both an industrial Android phone (IP68, 4,000 mAh battery, 50 MP camera, Android 16 with EMM and MDM support) and an intrinsically safe one. Its explosion-protection certificates are in progress and have not been issued.
In Västerås. Utilities and industrial firms in Västerås set their own equipment approval rules, and contractors working across plants may face different requirements at each. Enrolment of a phone in EMM or MDM would follow the employer's policy. The IS-04Z1 is designed for EMM/MDM; charging should take place in safe areas.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
Yes by design: IP68 sealing, a 4,000 mAh battery, a 50 MP camera and Android 16 with EMM and MDM support. The explosion-protection certificates are separate and still in progress.
Likely candidates are waste, recycled-wood and biomass fuel handling (zone 21), boiler plant fuel and auxiliary systems, fuel preparation and storage areas. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Yes, facilities that handle nuclear material usually have strict access and device-control rules in addition to any explosive-atmosphere rules. Such sites typically restrict or log electronics at entry, so contact the operator's security and safety staff well before visiting.
Typical examples are the combined heat and power plant with fuel handling, nuclear fuel fabrication with its own strict safety rules, and electrical and industrial plants with solvents or combustible dust. Each operator classifies its own areas, so ask for zone drawings first.
The climate is humid continental, with cold winters and warm summers, so devices see a wide range. The IS-04Z1 has a 4,000 mAh battery and IP68 rating, but no temperature range has been published here. Ask for the datasheet and confirm limits with the plant operator.
