Logistics
The city is a logistics centre in the Mälardalen region, about 110 km from Stockholm, which eases delivery and service visits.
Västerås has a humid continental climate bordering on oceanic, with cold winters, warm summers, a record low of minus 36.5 degrees Celsius in 1875 and a record high of 36.0 degrees in 1966. Handling of waste, wood and biomass fuels creates dust and gas areas where Zone 1 and Zone 21 work arises. Distribution partners for Västerås are being identified ahead of the Q4 2026 launch of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Västerås has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Västerås. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
Who operates there and which kinds of classified area a handset would meet, from the SAMS site research.
The city is a logistics centre in the Mälardalen region, about 110 km from Stockholm, which eases delivery and service visits.
Mälarenergi's Västerås plant produces about 700 GWh of electricity and 1,800 GWh of heat a year; Block 6 (2014) burns waste and biofuels and Block 7 (2020) recycled wood.
Västerås lies on the shore of Lake Mälaren at the mouth of the Svartån river, 110 km west of Stockholm, with 127,799 city residents at the end of 2019.
The city is one of Sweden's main logistics centres thanks to its position in the Mälardalen region with railways, waterways and highways, and ICA has a main distribution centre there.
Mälarenergi's heat and power plant in Västerås is Sweden's largest combined heat and power plant, and its newest unit, number 6, burns waste as fuel.
ABB's Swedish headquarters is in Västerås, where it produces robots, drive systems and high-voltage equipment, after the electrical manufacturer ASEA concentrated its operations there following early electrification in 1891.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Västerås. At a plant burning waste, wood and biomass, explosion-proof is a catch-all phrase. The real distinction is between dust protection for fuel handling areas and gas protection around boiler auxiliaries. Flameproof Ex d suits fixed equipment, while intrinsic safety suits handheld devices; the operator decides which concept each area needs.
A distributor for Västerås would carry the IS-04Z1 after certification completes; the Q4 2026 launch is the planning date and no appointment has been made. SAMS reviews applicants one by one and prefers companies with their own Ex-competent technical and service staff, since certified devices must not be repaired outside approved channels.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
Likely candidates are waste, recycled-wood and biomass fuel handling (zone 21), boiler plant fuel and auxiliary systems, fuel preparation and storage areas. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Västerås.
Winters are cold, with historical lows near minus 36 degrees, so battery life and screen response can suffer outdoors. Typically users keep spare batteries warm and check the device's rated operating temperature range against site conditions.
Direct trains run from Västerås Central to Stockholm, and Arlanda airport is 111 km away, so most visitors fly to Stockholm and continue by rail or road. Plan equipment delivery by road freight and confirm gate procedures with each site.
Its target marking, II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, is a gas marking, and certification is in progress. Biomass and waste fuel handling may be Zone 21 dust, which needs a separate dust-rated marking. Check the operator's classification and ask the plant's HSE team what applies.
