Basra Oil Company: geography and layout
Rumaila, Iraq's largest producing field, spans about 1,600 square km and lies roughly 50 km west of Basra, so sites are widely spread across open desert.
Basra Oil Company is a state-owned Iraqi company under the Ministry of Oil, headquartered in Basra and renamed from Iraqi South Oil Company in 2017. It manages southern oil fields; PetroChina became West Qurna 1 operator in January 2024, and BOC was approved in January 2026 to manage West Qurna 2. This page sets out how an IECEx smartphone supply route to Basra Oil Company will work for the IS-04Z1, and what is and is not available before launch.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. An IECEx smartphone for Basra Oil Company cannot be bought yet: the SAMS IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued), and the datasheet, certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Iraq. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

Supplier registration and equipment approval are run by the organisation itself; confirm current requirements with its procurement and HSE teams. The Ex certificate and an organisation's own vendor or engineering approval are two separate timelines; SAMS is working towards both and holds neither today.
Rumaila, Iraq's largest producing field, spans about 1,600 square km and lies roughly 50 km west of Basra, so sites are widely spread across open desert.
Iraq's Communications and Media Commission handles type approval; procedures follow EU-style compliance, usually through locally registered partners, so plan this before importing handsets.
Rumaila produced over 1.4 million barrels a day in 2024 with investment of nearly 3 billion US dollars, so facilities are under continuous upgrade and expansion.
Since June 2022 the Basra Energy Company Limited, owned by bp and PetroChina, has held the lead contractor role at Rumaila under the existing technical services contract.
IECEx is the international scheme for certifying equipment used in explosive atmospheres. A certificate of conformity is issued by an accredited certification body against a specific edition of the IEC 60079 standards and carries a schedule of conditions of safe use. It is not a legal requirement in most countries on its own, but many national schemes accept it as the technical basis.
The IECEx certificate for the IS-04Z1 is in progress and has not been issued. The marking target is Ex ib IIC T4, the intrinsic safety concept for Zone 1 gas with the hardest gas group (IIC) and a 135 °C temperature class.
In Basra Oil Company. Southern Iraqi fields host international operators, service companies and visiting engineers who work from IECEx documents. Their reviewers look for a certificate of conformity and its schedule of conditions. The IS-04Z1 is targeting IECEx, which is in progress. Basra Oil Company should therefore regard it as a planned route, not an approval the product already holds.
Supply of the IS-04Z1 to Basra Oil Company starts only after certification, through authorised distributors. Until then a buyer can request the datasheet and the written certification schedule, and arrange a safe-area evaluation unit, which puts the site on the list for the right local channel at launch.

Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
No. The IECEx certificate is in progress and has not been issued. SAMS will publish the number when it exists.
Supplier registration and equipment approval are run by the organisation itself; confirm current requirements with its procurement and HSE teams.
Through authorised distributors once certificates exist. Until then SAMS can send the datasheet and certification schedule and arrange safe-area evaluation units.
Iraq's Communications and Media Commission handles type approval, with procedures following EU-style compliance, usually through a local partner registered with the commission. Allow lead time, and ask Basra Oil Company or the contractor about any separate site security and import requirements.
The Rumaila Operating Organisation, formed under a 2009 technical services contract with Basra Oil Company's predecessor, operates the field with the state company, and since 2022 a bp and PetroChina company holds the lead contractor role. Supplier approvals therefore may run through several parties; confirm the route.
Summer heat and dust are harsh. IP68 sealing helps with dust, but batteries lose performance when hot, so keep spare charged units in shade and charge in safe areas. IP68 is not explosion protection. Check the permitted temperature range on the datasheet and test locally before wide deployment.
