Basra Oil Company: who works there
Under a 2009 technical services contract with the then South Oil Company, later renamed Basra Oil Company, the Rumaila Operating Organisation runs the field alongside the state company.
Basra Oil Company is a state-owned Iraqi company under the Ministry of Oil, headquartered in Basra and renamed from Iraqi South Oil Company in 2017. The Rumaila field, split into North and South, lies around 30 km north of the Kuwait border, with proven reserves put at about 17 billion barrels, so it is one of the largest fields to plan for. This page sets out how an intrinsically safe mobile phone supply route to Basra Oil Company will work for the IS-04Z1, and what is and is not available before launch.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. An intrinsically safe mobile phone for Basra Oil Company cannot be bought yet: the SAMS IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued), and the datasheet, certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Iraq. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of its operations and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
Supplier registration and equipment approval are run by the organisation itself; confirm current requirements with its procurement and HSE teams. The Ex certificate and an organisation's own vendor or engineering approval are two separate timelines; SAMS is working towards both and holds neither today.
Under a 2009 technical services contract with the then South Oil Company, later renamed Basra Oil Company, the Rumaila Operating Organisation runs the field alongside the state company.
The Rumaila workforce is about 8,200 people, 93 per cent of them Iraqi, with training academies on site, so local crews and contractors carry most field work.
Zubair was discovered in 1948 and Rumaila in 1953, so surface facilities range from decades-old plant to recently modernised units.
Rumaila, Iraq's largest producing field, spans about 1,600 square km and lies roughly 50 km west of Basra, so sites are widely spread across open desert.
Intrinsic safety limits the electrical and thermal energy in a circuit so that neither a spark nor a hot surface can ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even when a fault occurs. The ib level, used for Zone 1, tolerates one fault. It is the usual way to make a handheld device that a worker carries continuously through a hazardous area.
The IS-04Z1 is designed on this principle for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4). Intrinsic safety is a design basis, not a certificate: certification is in progress and none has been issued yet.
In Basra Oil Company. Field operators at oil production sites inspect separators, manifolds and pipeline equipment across wide areas. A handheld intrinsically safe phone allows photographs, readings and reports to be captured in place, in classified areas, rather than written up later. That suits routine rounds and shutdown inspection work around the Rumaila and Majnoon production facilities.
There is no stock to order for Basra Oil Company yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch, certification is in progress, and supply will run through authorised distributors after the certificates are issued. Procurement teams can prepare now with the datasheet, the certification schedule and a safe-area evaluation.
The technical specification, marking target and conditions of use, sent by email.
Which certificates are in progress, in what order, and what is still to be confirmed.
Evaluation units can be used for connectivity, MDM enrolment and workflow testing outside classified areas.

No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
The circuits are designed to limit energy so a spark or hot surface cannot ignite a gas or dust atmosphere, even with one fault (level ib, Zone 1). Certification of that design is in progress.
Supplier registration and equipment approval are run by the organisation itself; confirm current requirements with its procurement and HSE teams.
Through authorised distributors once certificates exist. Until then SAMS can send the datasheet and certification schedule and arrange safe-area evaluation units.
Iraq's Communications and Media Commission handles type approval, with procedures following EU-style compliance, usually through a local partner registered with the commission. Allow lead time, and ask Basra Oil Company or the contractor about any separate site security and import requirements.
The Rumaila Operating Organisation, formed under a 2009 technical services contract with Basra Oil Company's predecessor, operates the field with the state company, and since 2022 a bp and PetroChina company holds the lead contractor role. Supplier approvals therefore may run through several parties; confirm the route.
Summer heat and dust are harsh. IP68 sealing helps with dust, but batteries lose performance when hot, so keep spare charged units in shade and charge in safe areas. IP68 is not explosion protection. Check the permitted temperature range on the datasheet and test locally before wide deployment.
