Wet tropical climate
A wet season from May to October and coastal humidity apply.
The refinery's main contractor was China National Chemical Engineering Company, with Engineers India providing project management, so international EPC contractors and mixed-language teams are typical on large Lagos projects. The Dangote refinery at Lekki is designed for 650,000 barrels a day, so refining, storage and loading are the main hazardous areas. If you are specifying an IECEx smartphone for Lagos, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Lagos: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Lagos. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
A wet season from May to October and coastal humidity apply.
Apapa is the oldest and largest port complex and handles more than half of Nigeria's maritime trade.
The Dangote refinery at Lekki reached full refining capacity in February 2026 and is the largest employer in Lagos, so it is the best-known large classified-area site in the city.
Dangote refinery owner has announced an expansion to 1.4 million barrels a day, estimated at 14.3 billion US dollars and expected to be completed by 2029, which implies years of construction and commissioning work.
The Dangote refinery exports refined petroleum products to countries including Ghana, Cameroon, Togo and Tanzania, so loading terminals and marine transfer sites operate alongside the plant.
Lagos is built on lands separated by creeks around the south-west mouth of the Lagos Lagoon and protected from the Atlantic by barrier islands and sand spits, a humid coastal setting that is hard on equipment.
IECEx is the international scheme for certifying equipment used in explosive atmospheres. A certificate of conformity is issued by an accredited certification body against a specific edition of the IEC 60079 standards and carries a schedule of conditions of safe use. It is not a legal requirement in most countries on its own, but many national schemes accept it as the technical basis.
The IECEx certificate for the IS-04Z1 is in progress and has not been issued. The marking target is Ex ib IIC T4, the intrinsic safety concept for Zone 1 gas with the hardest gas group (IIC) and a 135 °C temperature class.
In Lagos. Contractors and EPC teams bringing equipment to Lekki or the ports typically work from international documentation, and IECEx is a common reference. It provides a certificate of conformity with a schedule of conditions that a reviewer can read against unit classification. IS-04Z1 IECEx certification is in progress, so nothing is issued.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
No. The IECEx certificate is in progress and has not been issued. SAMS will publish the number when it exists.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, fuel and lpg storage, port tanker jetties and loading. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
The Dangote refinery at Lekki is the largest, and the port areas of Apapa, Tin Can Island and Lekki handle fuel and bulk cargo. Shipyards, breweries and pharmaceutical plants also have classified areas. Confirm each site's zone classification and device rules with its operator.
Most imported equipment arrives through Apapa, Tin Can Island, Lekki or the international airport, and port congestion and customs clearance can add time. Agree a clearing agent, check radio-device import rules and allow buffer time before any shutdown or commissioning date.
Oil and gas suppliers often register on the NCDMB-managed NOGIC-JQS portal, and large operators also run their own formal vendor registration. Check which applies to your route to market. Confirm current requirements with the site operator or its procurement team.
