The Pembroke refinery began operating in 1964 and has been owned by Valero since 2011. Cardiff terminal supply by coastal tanker comes from here.
The Milford Haven Waterway in Pembrokeshire is Wales' largest port and a major energy hub. It hosts Valero's Pembroke refinery and the South Hook and Dragon LNG terminals, so Zone 1 work arises at process units, tank farms and gas handling areas. An IECEx mobile phone distributor in Wales (Milford Haven Waterway) would carry the IS-04Z1 to these buyers once certification completes.

The Pembroke refinery began operating in 1964 and has been owned by Valero since 2011. Cardiff terminal supply by coastal tanker comes from here.
South Hook, opened in 2009 with five storage tanks, is described as Europe's largest LNG terminal. With Dragon LNG, the two terminals can provide up to a quarter of UK gas demand.
In 2012 the Milford waterway was announced as an Enterprise Zone because of its importance to the energy sector, and parts of it lie within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park with protected sites.
Wales produced 30.2 TWh of electricity in 2018 and consumed 14.9 TWh, making it a net exporter, with gas generation at Baglan Bay and wind at Cefn Croes among its mix of plant.
Airbus Broughton in the north-east employs over 6,500 people, mostly in manufacturing, and is responsible for wing assembly for most Airbus aircraft, so composites and solvent areas exist alongside heavy engineering.
Two LNG terminals, South Hook on a former refinery site and Dragon LNG on a former Gulf refinery site, were built from 2006 and could eventually supply about 25% of the UK's gas needs.
IECEx is the international scheme for certifying equipment used in explosive atmospheres. A certificate of conformity is issued by an accredited certification body against a specific edition of the IEC 60079 standards and carries a schedule of conditions of safe use. It is not a legal requirement in most countries on its own, but many national schemes accept it as the technical basis.
The IECEx certificate for the IS-04Z1 is in progress and has not been issued. The marking target is Ex ib IIC T4, the intrinsic safety concept for Zone 1 gas with the hardest gas group (IIC) and a 135 °C temperature class.
In Wales (Milford Haven Waterway). The Pembroke refinery and the South Hook and Dragon LNG terminals work with international engineering and turnaround contractors, many of whom hold IECEx-based paperwork. SAMS is appointing authorised distributors ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No territory has been granted for Wales (Milford Haven Waterway) yet and applications are reviewed company by company. Because a certified Ex device cannot be opened by an ordinary phone workshop without invalidating its certificate, SAMS looks for partners who can provide competent technical support and after-sales service locally.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
No. The IECEx certificate is in progress and has not been issued. SAMS will publish the number when it exists.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, lng storage and regasification, crude and product jetties, tank farms. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Wales (Milford Haven Waterway).
English is normally sufficient for industrial site documentation in Wales, although some public-sector bodies use bilingual material. For plant equipment, operators typically require English manuals and safety information, but confirm the expectation with each site's procurement team.
The Milford Haven Waterway in Pembrokeshire is the best-known cluster, with oil and LNG terminals, jetties and processing plants, and there are gas pipelines, power stations, chemical works and fuel depots elsewhere in south and north Wales. Zoning is site-specific, so ask each operator for area drawings.
The waterway lies at the western end of Wales, so contractors often travel in for turnarounds, and equipment must arrive and be signed in on schedule. Plan delivery, charging and device enrolment before the work starts, and ask each operator how contractor equipment is checked on arrival.
