Power plant
Mälarenergi's Västerås plant produces about 700 GWh of electricity and 1,800 GWh of heat a year; Block 6 (2014) burns waste and biofuels and Block 7 (2020) recycled wood.
Västerås is a city on Lake Mälaren, 110 km west of Stockholm, with an industrial base that includes ABB and the Mälarenergi combined heat and power plant. Handling of waste, wood and biomass fuels creates dust and gas areas where Zone 1 and Zone 21 work arises. Distribution partners for Västerås are being identified ahead of the Q4 2026 launch of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Västerås has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

Humid continental climate with cold winters and warm summers, so equipment sees a wide temperature range.
Västerås has a humid continental climate bordering on oceanic, with cold winters, warm summers, a record low of minus 36.5 degrees Celsius in 1875 and a record high of 36.0 degrees in 1966.
Stockholm-Västerås Airport is 7.4 km from the centre with limited routes, and the larger Arlanda airport is 111 km away, with direct train links from Västerås Central to Stockholm.
Mälardalen University has about 16,000 students across Västerås and Eskilstuna, and industries such as Bombardier Transportation and GE Power also operate in the city.
Västerås lies on the shore of Lake Mälaren at the mouth of the Svartån river, 110 km west of Stockholm, with 127,799 city residents at the end of 2019.
IECEx is the international scheme for certifying equipment used in explosive atmospheres. A certificate of conformity is issued by an accredited certification body against a specific edition of the IEC 60079 standards and carries a schedule of conditions of safe use. It is not a legal requirement in most countries on its own, but many national schemes accept it as the technical basis.
The IECEx certificate for the IS-04Z1 is in progress and has not been issued. The marking target is Ex ib IIC T4, the intrinsic safety concept for Zone 1 gas with the hardest gas group (IIC) and a 135 °C temperature class.
In Västerås. Västerås industry includes international groups, and plant projects bring outside engineering teams. An IECEx certificate of conformity, with its schedule of conditions, gives such visitors a shared reference across borders. For the IS-04Z1, IECEx certification is in progress and no certificate exists yet, so none can be quoted.
Distribution of the IS-04Z1 is by authorised partners only, and SAMS has not yet granted a territory for Västerås. Each application is reviewed on its merits. Because opening a certified Ex handset in an ordinary workshop invalidates its certificate, the partner must be able to support and service the device locally.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
No. The IECEx certificate is in progress and has not been issued. SAMS will publish the number when it exists.
Likely candidates are waste, recycled-wood and biomass fuel handling (zone 21), boiler plant fuel and auxiliary systems, fuel preparation and storage areas. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Västerås.
Winters are cold, with historical lows near minus 36 degrees, so battery life and screen response can suffer outdoors. Typically users keep spare batteries warm and check the device's rated operating temperature range against site conditions.
Direct trains run from Västerås Central to Stockholm, and Arlanda airport is 111 km away, so most visitors fly to Stockholm and continue by rail or road. Plan equipment delivery by road freight and confirm gate procedures with each site.
Its target marking, II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, is a gas marking, and certification is in progress. Biomass and waste fuel handling may be Zone 21 dust, which needs a separate dust-rated marking. Check the operator's classification and ask the plant's HSE team what applies.
