The port has deep-water jetties able to handle very large vessels, including Valemax ore carriers.
The port lies in Liwa wilaya, in the centre of Al Batinah North Governorate, on the Gulf of Oman side of the Strait of Hormuz, so ships reach it without passing through the strait.
Government development plans for Sohar include more than 5 billion US dollars of investment in the steel industry, which adds heavy-industry maintenance work to the port's chemical and fuel sites.
SOHAR Port is described as handling more than one million tonnes of sea cargo a week and around 3,500 ship calls a year, so jetty and yard traffic is continuous.
The first lease at the new port was signed with Sohar Refinery in 2003, and the free zone itself was established in 2010, so many plants are of 2000s to 2010s vintage.
IECEx is the international scheme for certifying equipment used in explosive atmospheres. A certificate of conformity is issued by an accredited certification body against a specific edition of the IEC 60079 standards and carries a schedule of conditions of safe use. It is not a legal requirement in most countries on its own, but many national schemes accept it as the technical basis.
The IECEx certificate for the IS-04Z1 is in progress and has not been issued. The marking target is Ex ib IIC T4, the intrinsic safety concept for Zone 1 gas with the hardest gas group (IIC) and a 135 °C temperature class.
In Sohar. With a deep-water port that receives very large vessels and several international operators, Sohar draws visiting contractors and suppliers who often work to IECEx. The scheme provides a certificate of conformity and a schedule of conditions. IS-04Z1 IECEx certification is in progress, so nothing is issued.

Radio equipment sold or used in Oman normally needs Telecommunications Regulatory Authority type approval or a declaration of conformity route, with a TRA label. Requirements change, so check the authority's current rules or ask your local importer before shipment.
Typically the tenant or terminal operator, not the port authority alone. Dry-bulk and general cargo areas run under a terminal concession, while refinery and chemical tenants have their own HSE rules. Confirm the approval route with the site operator before shipping any device.
Summers are extremely hot, with a record of 50.8 C, and rainfall is low. Check the certified ambient range, keep devices out of direct sun and charge only in a safe area. IP68 helps with dust but is not explosion protection.
