The IS-04Z1 is designed for people who work inside classified areas at Indian refineries, gas plants, LNG jetties and API blocks: field operators, inspection engineers, shift in-charges, and the HSE and materials teams whose sign-off a device has to survive. PESO approval from the Chief Controller of Explosives is required for Ex electrical apparatus at petroleum, gas cylinder and pressure vessel premises, under rules such as the Petroleum Rules 2002. Distribution partners for India are being identified ahead of the Q4 2026 launch of the IS-04Z1.

What “IECEx” means for a smartphone
IECEx is the international scheme for certifying equipment used in explosive atmospheres. A certificate of conformity is issued by an accredited certification body against a specific edition of the IEC 60079 standards and carries a schedule of conditions of safe use. It is not a legal requirement in most countries on its own, but many national schemes accept it as the technical basis.
The IECEx certificate for the IS-04Z1 is in progress and has not been issued. The marking target is Ex ib IIC T4, the intrinsic safety concept for Zone 1 gas with the hardest gas group (IIC) and a 135 °C temperature class.
In India. Indian refineries and gas plants are served by large EPC firms and international contractors. For them the IECEx certificate of conformity and schedule of conditions give a common reference, while PESO is the local route. IECEx certification for the IS-04Z1 is in progress, with PESO, BIS and WPC approvals also in progress.

Distributing the IS-04Z1 in India
Distribution of the IS-04Z1 is by authorised partners only, and SAMS has not yet granted a territory for India. Each application is reviewed on its merits. Because opening a certified Ex handset in an ordinary workshop invalidates its certificate, the partner must be able to support and service the device locally.

Frequently asked questions
Can we buy an IECEx mobile phone in India today?
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
What does an IECEx mobile phone in India cost?
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Does the IS-04Z1 hold an IECEx certificate?
No. The IECEx certificate is in progress and has not been issued. SAMS will publish the number when it exists.

What telecom approvals does a smartphone need in India?
Supplier guides list TEC's MTCTE scheme, WPC Equipment Type Approval for radio equipment, BIS registration and trusted-source designation for network equipment, each with its own scope. Which ones apply depends on the device, so check current requirements with the Department of Telecommunications or an agent.
Does PESO accept IECEx certificates?
A July 2025 procedure accepts an IECEx certificate of conformity with its test report from all manufacturers, and EU-type examination certificates from EU-based manufacturers only. Edition lists and document requirements change, so check the current PESO notice or ask a consultant before applying.
Is the device suited to monsoon and coastal conditions?
The IS-04Z1 has IP68 sealing, which helps with water and dust. That is an ingress rating only, and battery behaviour in heat and humidity is worth testing. Ask for the datasheet's operating ranges and trial a unit on a coastal site round.
