India: geography and layout
The largest crude reserves are in the Western Offshore region at 37 per cent and Assam at 27 per cent, so both offshore platforms and remote north-eastern fields matter.
The IS-04Z1 is designed for people who work inside classified areas at Indian refineries, gas plants, LNG jetties and API blocks: field operators, inspection engineers, shift in-charges, and the HSE and materials teams whose sign-off a device has to survive. This page sets out how an IECEx cell phone supply route to India will work for the IS-04Z1, and what is and is not available before launch.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. An IECEx cell phone for India cannot be bought yet: the SAMS IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued), and the datasheet, certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in India. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

The largest crude reserves are in the Western Offshore region at 37 per cent and Assam at 27 per cent, so both offshore platforms and remote north-eastern fields matter.
Imports are applied for by an Indian service provider or distributor, and there is no separate PESO mark; the Ex marking and the approval letter show compliance.
India imports 82 per cent of its oil needs, so import terminals, tank farms and coastal refineries are central to supply.
India's first oil deposits were found near Digboi in Assam in 1889, and its gas industry began in the 1960s with discoveries in Assam and the Mumbai High field.
IECEx is the international scheme for certifying equipment used in explosive atmospheres. A certificate of conformity is issued by an accredited certification body against a specific edition of the IEC 60079 standards and carries a schedule of conditions of safe use. It is not a legal requirement in most countries on its own, but many national schemes accept it as the technical basis.
The IECEx certificate for the IS-04Z1 is in progress and has not been issued. The marking target is Ex ib IIC T4, the intrinsic safety concept for Zone 1 gas with the hardest gas group (IIC) and a 135 °C temperature class.
In India. Indian refineries and gas plants are served by large EPC firms and international contractors. For them the IECEx certificate of conformity and schedule of conditions give a common reference, while PESO is the local route. IECEx certification for the IS-04Z1 is in progress, with PESO, BIS and WPC approvals also in progress.
Nothing can be bought for India today: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch, and SAMS will supply end users through authorised distributors once certificates exist. What a buyer can do now is take the specification, ask for the written certification schedule and arrange a safe-area evaluation, so that the right local channel contacts you at launch.
The technical specification, marking target and conditions of use, sent by email.
Which certificates are in progress, in what order, and what is still to be confirmed.
Evaluation units can be used for connectivity, MDM enrolment and workflow testing outside classified areas.

No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
No. The IECEx certificate is in progress and has not been issued. SAMS will publish the number when it exists.
The market guide for India covers Jamnagar, Gujarat, Dahej and the Gujarat PCPIR, Hazira and Surat, Vadodara, Koyali, Ankleshwar, among others. Site-level pages are linked below.
Through authorised distributors once certificates exist. Until then SAMS can send the datasheet and certification schedule and arrange safe-area evaluation units.
PESO approval is required for Ex electrical apparatus at petroleum, gas cylinder and pressure vessel premises, and imports are applied for through an Indian service provider or distributor. Whether it applies to a given site depends on the licensing category, so ask the site's safety team and a PESO consultant.
Typically the large coastal refineries such as Jamnagar, offshore platforms in the Western Offshore region, petrochemical and fertiliser complexes, and gas fields in Assam and Gujarat. Each operator issues its own area classification, so request the drawing, gas group and temperature class first.
The market guide lists PESO, BIS and WPC approvals as in progress, alongside IECEx. None has been granted yet. Which are needed for a given site depends on the operator and the regulator, so ask the site operator and check the current status before ordering.
