Mutual Energy owns the Scotland-Northern Ireland pipeline, the Belfast gas transmission pipeline from Islandmagee, and the Moyle electricity interconnector.
Northern Ireland is a UK region with gas-fired power stations, the Scotland-Northern Ireland gas pipeline landing at Islandmagee and a proposed gas storage cavern project there. Machinery and equipment manufacturing, food processing, textile and electronics manufacturing are the leading industries, concentrated mostly in the eastern parts of Northern Ireland around Belfast. This page explains what to look for in a hazardous area smartphone for Northern Ireland, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Northern Ireland: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Northern Ireland. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
Mutual Energy owns the Scotland-Northern Ireland pipeline, the Belfast gas transmission pipeline from Islandmagee, and the Moyle electricity interconnector.
Under the Windsor Framework, relevant EU product rules apply in Northern Ireland, so equipment is typically CE marked, with UKNI added where a UK notified body is used.
The Belfast yard has sea access through the Victoria Channel with no locks or height restrictions, 24-hour ISPS-approved security, and two airports close by: George Best Belfast City five minutes away and Belfast International under 30 minutes.
Key industries in 2024 include aerospace, agriculture, construction, engineering, health technology and manufacturing, and engineering is the largest manufacturing sub-sector, particularly aerospace and heavy machinery.
The Harland and Wolff shipyard in the Port of Belfast has two of Europe's largest drydocks, with a main dock of 556 m by 93 m, and is licensed for vessel repair and open grit blasting.
Northern Ireland was self-sufficient in food production by 2021 and exported more than half of its meat and crops, so food plants with dust, ammonia refrigeration and flour or feed handling are common.
A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.
No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.
In Northern Ireland. Classified areas in Northern Ireland sit at gas-fired power station fuel systems, gas transmission pipeline assets, gas pressure reduction sites and fuel storage. The Scotland-Northern Ireland pipeline lands at Islandmagee, where a gas storage cavern has been proposed. Operators classify the zones, with HSENI as the regulator, not SAMS.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.
Likely candidates are gas-fired power station fuel systems, gas transmission pipeline assets, gas pressure reduction sites, fuel storage. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Goods moving between Great Britain and Northern Ireland pass through post-Brexit customs arrangements, which can add paperwork and lead time. For urgent site equipment, plan stock holding in Northern Ireland or the Republic and confirm the current import documentation with your freight forwarder.
Northern Ireland has a mild but wet and windy climate, with frequent rain and salt air near the coast, so sealing, corrosion resistance and condensation tolerance matter more than extreme temperature ratings. Check ingress protection and gasket quality, and ask the site about its own requirements.
Under the Windsor Framework, relevant EU product rules apply in Northern Ireland, so equipment is typically CE marked, with UKNI added where a UK notified body is used. Because rules can change, confirm the current position with the site operator and HSENI guidance.
