Nickel hubs
The Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park, begun in 2013 in Central Sulawesi, is reported to be the largest nickel-based industrial area, with 11 smelters.
Indonesian mining includes coal in Kalimantan, nickel in Sulawesi and the Grasberg copper-gold complex in Papua. Nickel output reached about 2.2 million tonnes in 2023 and relies heavily on coal-fired power, accounting for around 22 percent of national energy and industrial emissions, so captive coal power plants sit beside many smelters. This page explains what to look for in a hazardous area smartphone for Indonesian mining regions, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Indonesian mining regions: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Indonesia Mining. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

Hot, wet tropical conditions at lowland sites; cooler and very wet in the Papua highlands.
Nickel laterite is processed in Indonesia by methods including high-pressure acid leaching, which brings pressurised acid and chemical handling areas into mine-site processing plants.
Mining is governed by Law No. 4 of 2009 as amended by Law No. 3 of 2020, and the Directorate General of Mineral and Coal under the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry sets policy.
PT Borneo Alumina Indonesia finished an alumina refinery in West Kalimantan with a capacity of 1 million tonnes a year, starting operations in December 2024, and Freeport built a 0.6 million tonne copper smelter at Manyar in East Java.
The Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park in Central Sulawesi, the country's largest nickel processing site, covers 2,000 hectares and is served by its own seaport, an airport and a 2 GW coal power plant.
A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.
No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.
In Indonesian mining regions. Hazardous areas on Indonesian mines include coal handling and preparation plants with dust, fuel and lubricant stores, underground workings and smelter or process plants. Each operator classifies its own areas. The sheet does not claim methane for any specific mine, so ask each operator.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.
Likely candidates are coal handling and preparation plants (dust, zone 21), fuel and lubricant storage, underground mine areas, smelter and process plant areas. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Typical examples are underground methane or coal-dust zones, fuel storage and workshops, explosives magazines, smelter and processing areas with gases or dust, and captive power plants. Each operator classifies its own site, so confirm the zones with the mine's safety department.
Yes. Smelters and acid-leach plants emphasise process gases, chemicals and high temperatures, while coal mines emphasise methane and combustible dust. The device choice and the area type differ, so ask each site for its classification and permit rules.
Remote operations rely on long supply chains, so a failed device may take time to replace. Plan spares, local service access and offline-capable apps. Check heat, wet and altitude conditions at each site. Confirm site rules with the operator.
