Pipeline link
Crude oil reaches the refinery by pipeline from a tanker port a few kilometres away, so classified areas are spread between port and refinery sites.
Gothenburg hosts Sweden's largest general energy port, with about 2,200 tanker calls a year and 20.7 million tonnes of energy products handled in 2025, and the Preemraff Göteborg refinery nearby. The Port of Gothenburg handles nearly 30 percent of Sweden's foreign trade; crude oil was its main import at about 20 million tonnes in 2013, and 24 scheduled rail shuttles serve Norway and Sweden. If you are specifying a hazardous area smartphone for Gothenburg (Göteborg), this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Gothenburg (Göteborg): pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Göteborg. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
Crude oil reaches the refinery by pipeline from a tanker port a few kilometres away, so classified areas are spread between port and refinery sites.
A maritime climate with cool, damp winters on the west coast; outdoor equipment should tolerate rain and low temperatures.
Göteborg Landvetter Airport is 25 km south-east of the centre, and the city has the largest tram network in Scandinavia with over 80 km of double track, though soft ground means there is no metro.
The Port of Gothenburg is the largest harbour in Scandinavia, at the mouth of the Göta älv, Scandinavia's largest drainage basin, and trade and shipping have always played a major role in the city's economy.
Chalmers University of Technology and technical schools linked to SKF and Volvo supply engineering talent, so trained technicians for industrial and marine work are available locally.
Gothenburg has an oceanic climate moderated by the Gulf Stream, with summer highs of 20 to 22 degrees Celsius, windy winters between about minus 1 and 4 degrees, and moderate rain through the year.
A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.
No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.
In Gothenburg (Göteborg). The Gothenburg area has refinery process units, tanker berths and loading arms, pumping stations and bulk fuel tanks. The port operator and the refinery operator classify their own areas, and a pipeline from a nearby tanker port spreads classified areas between sites. SAMS does not classify any area and relies on operator drawings.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, tanker berths and loading arms, pumping stations and valve areas, bulk fuel tank storage. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Yes. The city sits on the west coast with an international airport, a large port and regional rail and road links, and a deep technical workforce from local industry and universities. Plan travel to individual sites separately and confirm each site's induction rules.
The climate is mild for its latitude, but winters are cold and windy and rain is regular, with salt air near the harbour. Typically users want good ingress protection, battery performance in cold weather and routine cleaning of exposed connectors.
The Energy Port runs ISPS security level 1 with gate controls, including random alcohol testing at Gate 1, so visitors and contractors pass formal entry checks. Device approval is separate and set by the operator. Ask the port or refinery HSE team what evidence they expect for a phone.
