Shell Energy India operates the Hazira LNG terminal. The environmental clearance granted on 2 September 2025 covers expansion from 6.28 to 26.2 million tonnes a year, so this is an approved project rather than existing capacity.
The L and T shipyard at Hazira began building small ships and naval craft in 2010 and was renamed the A M Naik Heavy Engineering Complex in 2021.
It has two full-containment cryogenic tanks of 160,000 cubic metres each, 80 metres across and 40 metres high, holding LNG at minus 165 degrees Celsius.
A 1.3 kilometre jetty can accept LNG carriers of up to 145,000 cubic metres, and from July 2010 the terminal has been open for use by other companies.

A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.
No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.
