Coastal climate
The area is generally hot and humid with monsoon rain, so sealed devices suit outdoor work.
It has two full-containment cryogenic tanks of 160,000 cubic metres each, 80 metres across and 40 metres high, holding LNG at minus 165 degrees Celsius. Its LNG terminal, gas and petrochemical plants and heavy engineering works create Zone 1 and Zone 21 areas. Distribution partners for Hazira, Surat are being identified ahead of the Q4 2026 launch of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Hazira, Surat has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Hazira India. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

Shell Energy India operates the Hazira LNG terminal. The environmental clearance granted on 2 September 2025 covers expansion from 6.28 to 26.2 million tonnes a year, so this is an approved project rather than existing capacity.
The L and T shipyard at Hazira began building small ships and naval craft in 2010 and was renamed the A M Naik Heavy Engineering Complex in 2021.
Hazira is described as one of India's major ports and the most important element of the Surat Metropolitan Region, with a mix of power, gas, cement and shipbuilding users.
A 1.3 kilometre jetty can accept LNG carriers of up to 145,000 cubic metres, and from July 2010 the terminal has been open for use by other companies.
Hazira is a suburb and port of Surat on the Tapti River, about 8 kilometres from the Arabian Sea and 22 kilometres from Surat city, a 30 to 35 minute drive.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Hazira, Surat. At Hazira the phrase explosion-proof covers both gas plant equipment and dust areas. Flameproof Ex d suits fixed gear in LNG regasification and gas processing, while a carried handheld depends on intrinsic safety. Dust areas from heavy engineering and powder handling need their own protection approach.
Distribution of the IS-04Z1 is by authorised partners only, and SAMS has not yet granted a territory for Hazira, Surat. Each application is reviewed on its merits. Because opening a certified Ex handset in an ordinary workshop invalidates its certificate, the partner must be able to support and service the device locally.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
Likely candidates are lng regasification, gas processing, petrochemical plants, marine terminals. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Hazira, Surat.
The terminal was opened to other companies in July 2010, which means more operators and contractors can be present on site. Each party's contractors usually follow their own induction, so confirm who controls the area you will visit.
Hazira is close to the Arabian Sea and the Tapti River, with a monsoon of about 1,200 millimetres, so humidity and salt air are normal. Choose sealed devices and ask the supplier about corrosion resistance.
Yes, the area includes both Zone 1 gas areas and Zone 21 dust areas, the latter linked to powder handling and heavy engineering. A gas marking does not cover dust. Check the dust classification with the plant operator before any device is taken into those areas.
