Industrial estates
SIER was founded in 1974 and covers about 245 hectares with around 300 companies; the JIIPE estate and port in Gresik is a further 3,000-hectare development by Pelindo and AKR.
Surabaya is the capital of East Java and home to Tanjung Perak, Indonesia's second-largest port. The city hosts a large shipyard and several naval schools, and in the Dutch colonial era hosted the most extensive naval base in the colony, so marine and ship-repair work is a core local activity. If you are specifying a hazardous area mobile phone for Surabaya and the Gresik industrial area, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Surabaya and the Gresik industrial area: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Surabaya. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
Who operates there and which kinds of classified area a handset would meet, from the SAMS site research.
SIER was founded in 1974 and covers about 245 hectares with around 300 companies; the JIIPE estate and port in Gresik is a further 3,000-hectare development by Pelindo and AKR.
Gresik lies about 25 kilometres north-west of Surabaya, and its two largest factories are Semen Gresik and Petrokimia Gresik.
Satellite cities of Mojokerto, Gresik, Sidoarjo, Bangkalan and Lamongan form the wider metropolitan area, which is where much heavier industry and port-side plants are found around the city.
The Port of Tanjung Perak in north Surabaya is Indonesia's second-busiest seaport, on a site where a modern port facility was first built in 1910, giving contractors a major sea gateway to eastern Indonesia.
Surabaya is the capital of East Java and Indonesia's second-largest city, on the Madura Strait, and its metropolitan area of about 6,309 sq km has an estimated 10.08 million people.
Surabaya has a tropical wet and dry climate with a wet season from October to May, steady average highs near 31 degrees Celsius and lows near 23 degrees all year.
A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.
No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.
In Surabaya and the Gresik industrial area. Classified areas span port fuel and chemical handling, fertiliser and chemical plants, cement plant dust areas and chemical plants in the industrial estate. Each plant or terminal operator classifies its own areas, not SAMS. Ask each for its drawings.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.
Likely candidates are port fuel and chemical handling, fertiliser and chemical plants, cement plant dust areas, industrial estate chemical plants. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
The Suramadu Bridge links Surabaya and Madura by road, and Tanjung Perak serves sea freight to eastern Indonesia. Allow time for customs clearance and for any site gate checks on electronic devices at plants and terminals.
It has Indonesia's second-busiest seaport, a large shipyard and naval facilities, plus freight forwarders and customs brokers. Marine work typically involves tank entry and hot work, so confirm each yard's permit rules for portable electronic devices.
Not necessarily. Chemical and fuel areas are gas hazards, while cement works are dust areas, and each needs a suitable marking. The IS-04Z1 target marking covers gas only. Check each area's classification with the operator.
