Singapore refineries: who works there

The organisation includes dedicated functions for process safety, reliability and maintenance, and procurement and warehouse, which are the usual contacts for contractors and equipment suppliers.

Singapore refineries: infrastructure

Jurong Rock Caverns store crude oil, condensate, naphtha and gasoil underground nearby, supporting feedstock flexibility for refiners on Jurong Island.

Singapore refineries: rules and approvals

Visitors surrender contraband such as matches and lighters, declare cameras, computers and laptops, wear a security pass at all times and stay with their sponsor inside the refinery.

Singapore refineries: people and language

Staff and visitors reach Jurong Island by bus from Lakeside MRT or Jurong East, with some employers running private shuttles from the checkpoint to their premises.

The term · hazardous area

What “hazardous area” means for a smartphone

A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.

No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.

In Singapore refineries. The classified areas are refinery process units, crude and product storage, jetties and utility and cogeneration areas. The operators, not SAMS, classify them. With about 1.5 million barrels a day processed across the sites, a specifier should ask each refinery for its own classification documents.

Questions · Singapore Refinery

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy a hazardous area mobile phone in Singapore Refinery today?

No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.

What does a hazardous area mobile phone in Singapore Refinery cost?

There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.

Which hazardous areas is the IS-04Z1 designed for?

Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.

Which areas at Singapore refineries would use it?

Likely candidates are refinery process units, crude and product storage, jetties, utility and cogeneration areas. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.

Is intrinsically safe the same as explosion proof?

Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.

How large are the refineries on Jurong Island?

One refinery states a crude capacity of 290,000 barrels a day, and other operators share the island. The scale means many contractors, so expect formal induction, permits and equipment checks for any portable electronics.

Who should a supplier contact at a refinery?

Refineries usually route equipment queries through procurement and the process safety or HSE function, with reliability and maintenance teams as end users. Ask your sponsor for the correct contacts and the current approved-equipment procedure.

Do all Singapore refineries accept the same devices?

No. The refineries use their own approval and contractor systems, so acceptance at one does not carry over to another. The IS-04Z1 has no certificate yet. Send the datasheet to each operator's procurement and HSE teams and confirm with the site operator.
