Scale
Tutupan produced an estimated 36 million tonnes in 2023 and Sangatta about 41 million tonnes, so fleets and workforces are large and contractor-heavy.
Kalimantan hosts some of Indonesia's largest open-pit coal mines, including Kaltim Prima Coal at Sangatta in East Kalimantan and Adaro's Tutupan mine in South Kalimantan. Indonesia's coal production reached a record 836 million tonnes in 2024, up from 775 million tonnes in 2023, and the country is the world's largest coal exporter. This page explains what to look for in a hazardous area mobile phone for Kalimantan coal mining region, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Kalimantan coal mining region: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. A buyer's engineering review is separate from the certificate. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Kalimantan Mining. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The companies on site and the hazardous-area types a handset is likely to meet there.
Tutupan produced an estimated 36 million tonnes in 2023 and Sangatta about 41 million tonnes, so fleets and workforces are large and contractor-heavy.
The climate is equatorial, so ingress protection and charging routines are practical concerns.
Coal dust is a recognised health and handling issue in Indonesian mining, so dust control, cleaning and sealed enclosures matter for electronics used around crushers, conveyors and stockpiles.
A Domestic Market Obligation requires coal miners to allocate 25 percent of production to local use at a fixed price, which shapes how much coal is railed and barged to domestic power stations.
Coal bed methane reserves of about 12.8 trillion cubic metres lie mainly in Kalimantan and Sumatra, which is a reminder that methane can accompany coal seams, though development has been limited.
Indonesia's significant coal deposits are in South Sumatra, East Kalimantan and South Kalimantan, and reserves are estimated to last over 80 years at current rates of extraction.
A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.
No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.
In Kalimantan coal mining region. Hazardous areas include coal handling and preparation plants (dust, Zone 21), fuel and lubricant storage, mine-site power generation and coal loading terminals. Each operator classifies its own sites, not SAMS. The sheet does not assume underground methane here.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.
Likely candidates are coal handling and preparation plants (dust, zone 21), fuel and lubricant storage, mine-site power generation, coal loading terminals. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Combustible coal dust around crushers, conveyors, stockpiles and loading, plus fuel storage and workshops. Open-pit sites typically have fewer gas risks than underground mines, but the operator defines its zones, so ask for them before using handheld devices.
Most deliveries go by sea to Balikpapan, Samarinda or Banjarmasin and then by road or barge, so allow longer lead times. Stock spare batteries and chargers and confirm customs and radio type-approval requirements with your freight agent.
Many crews share devices and sites, so enrolment, ownership and return procedures matter. Heat, humidity and dust affect battery and seals. Charge only in safe areas. Check the operator's approved-vendor list before purchase. Confirm the current process with the site operator.
