Climate
Hot desert climate with high summer temperatures and dust.
Al-Ahsa is the largest governorate in Saudi Arabia by area, with Hofuf as its seat and a 2022 population of about 1.1 million. Ghawar's reservoir is a limestone about 85 m thick, lying roughly 1,800 to 2,100 m below ground, so wells and surface facilities handle high-pressure oil and associated gas. This page explains what to look for in a hazardous area mobile phone for Al-Ahsa (Hofuf), and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Al-Ahsa (Hofuf): pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.
| Check | What to look for | IS-04Z1 today |
|---|---|---|
| Zone | 0, 1 or 2 for gas; 20, 21 or 22 for dust | Designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 |
| Gas group | IIA, IIB or IIC | IIC (target) |
| Area drawing | The operator's own classification drawing | Decided by the site operator |
| Where it applies | Al-Ahsa (Hofuf): Oil wellsites and gathering, Associated gas handling, Water injection facilities | Classified by the site operator |

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Al Ahsa. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
Who operates there and which kinds of classified area a handset would meet, from the SAMS site research.
Hot desert climate with high summer temperatures and dust.
Hofuf is served by an airport, rail station and highways to Riyadh and Dammam.
Aramco's 2019 bond prospectus put Ghawar's maximum output at 3.8 million barrels a day, well below the older market estimate of more than 5 million.
The governorate has fertile land and abundant water, and has historically been a trade crossroads linking Arabia with Persia and India.
Al-Ahsa International Airport lies 25 km from the city centre and has flights to Jeddah, Medina and Dubai; highways link the area to Riyadh, Dammam and Abu Dhabi.
The Al-Ahsa oasis and Hofuf lie on the east flank of Ghawar, in the area of the 'Uthmaniyah production zone, so farmland and settlements sit close to oil and gas facilities.
A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.
No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.
In Al-Ahsa (Hofuf). Al Ahsa's classified areas include oil wellsites and gathering, associated gas handling, water injection facilities and pipeline pump stations. Aramco as operator does the classification, not SAMS. A buyer should obtain the area documents for the specific facility and match zone and gas group to the device marking.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.
Likely candidates are oil wellsites and gathering, associated gas handling, water injection facilities, pipeline pump stations. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Al-Ahsa International Airport is about 25 km from the city centre and has scheduled flights to Jeddah, Medina and Dubai. Many visitors instead fly to Dammam or Riyadh and drive, so check current schedules and the client's transport arrangements.
Water injection itself is mainly a pumping and piping activity, but it supports oil production, so nearby wellheads, separators and gas handling can be classified. The classification is set site by site by the operator; ask for the area classification drawings before specifying handheld devices.
Hot desert conditions with high summer temperatures and dust are normal here. Batteries and electronics have temperature limits, so check the datasheet range against expected conditions, and avoid leaving a handset in a hot vehicle. IP68 helps against dust, but it does not address heat or ignition risk.
