Field scale
Ghawar measures about 280 by 30 km and is divided into zones including Ain Dar and Shedgum, Uthmaniyah, Hawiyah and Haradh, so sites are widely spread.
Al-Ahsa is the largest governorate in Saudi Arabia by area, with Hofuf as its seat and a 2022 population of about 1.1 million. The Ghawar oil field, the world's largest conventional field, lies within it and is operated by Aramco, creating Zone 1 areas at wells and gas handling facilities. Distribution partners for Al-Ahsa (Hofuf) are being identified ahead of the Q4 2026 launch of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Al-Ahsa (Hofuf) has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

Hot desert climate with high summer temperatures and dust.
Saudi Arabia's Communications, Space and Technology Commission issues radio type-approval certificates, renewed every two years, and accepts European test documents for handsets.
Ghawar was discovered in 1948 and put on stream in 1951; it is entirely owned and operated by Saudi Aramco, so one operator's rules cover the oil-field work.
Aramco's 2019 bond prospectus put Ghawar's maximum output at 3.8 million barrels a day, well below the older market estimate of more than 5 million.
The governorate has fertile land and abundant water, and has historically been a trade crossroads linking Arabia with Persia and India.
“Ex-proof” is shorthand for equipment carrying an explosion-protection marking (the Ex mark) that matches the area it enters. The marking states the protection concept, gas or dust group and temperature class, and it must be backed by a certificate issued by a recognised body, so a phone described as Ex-proof should come with a certificate number you can check.
The IS-04Z1 is designed to carry the marking II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. That is a target: certification is in progress, no certificate has been issued, and SAMS will publish the certificate numbers when they exist.
In Al-Ahsa (Hofuf). Associated gas handling and wellsites suggest Zone 1 gas areas, so a marking check reads the zone, gas group and temperature class from the operator's classification. Fuels and gas are often in the lower groups, but the operator decides. The IS-04Z1 target marking is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4.
Distribution of the IS-04Z1 is by authorised partners only, and SAMS has not yet granted a territory for Al-Ahsa (Hofuf). Each application is reviewed on its merits. Because opening a certified Ex handset in an ordinary workshop invalidates its certificate, the partner must be able to support and service the device locally.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. It becomes a marking only when the certificate is issued; until then it is a design target.
Likely candidates are oil wellsites and gathering, associated gas handling, water injection facilities, pipeline pump stations. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Al-Ahsa (Hofuf).
Often yes. The Al-Ahsa oasis and Hofuf sit on the eastern flank of the Ghawar field, so wellsites, gas handling and pipelines can be near settlements and agricultural land. Follow the operator's access and gate procedures rather than assuming open public roads lead to sites.
Ghawar is divided into five production areas running north to south, and the governorate covers about 375,000 square km. Teams often travel long distances between sites, so plan device charging, spare batteries and offline documentation rather than relying on constant connectivity.
Ghawar is divided into several zones and sites are widely spread, so coverage and travel time vary. Ask the site operator about network coverage and whether devices need to work offline. Device management through EMM or MDM should be planned around that, and handsets are best charged at a safe base.
