Denmark: logistics and access
Port Esbjerg calls itself the world's largest base port for offshore wind activities and says it has been involved in shipping components to more than 65 offshore wind projects.
The IS-04Z1 is an explosion proof mobile phone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21, from a wet deck 225 km west of Esbjerg to a fermentation building at Kalundborg and a biogas upgrading skid on Lolland. This page explains what to look for in a hazardous area cell phone for Denmark, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Denmark: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Denmark. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The classified areas, operators and sites below are the ones covered in the SAMS Denmark market guide.
Port Esbjerg calls itself the world's largest base port for offshore wind activities and says it has been involved in shipping components to more than 65 offshore wind projects.
Denmark imports about 12% of its energy but is also an exporter, and its electricity grid is connected by transmission lines to other European countries.
Denmark has North Sea oil and gas but ranked only 57th among net crude exporters in 2023 after ranking 32nd in 2008, so offshore work is mature, with decommissioning and maintenance a larger share.
North Sea natural gas projects began in 1984 and North Sea production made Denmark self-sufficient in energy in 1997, which explains the established offshore supply chain on the west coast.
A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.
No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.
In Denmark. Danish classified areas divide cleanly: offshore production in the North Sea reached from Esbjerg, refining and fuel storage at Fredericia and the harbours, and the biological industry at Kalundborg and across Zealand and Jutland, plus biogas and Power-to-X sites. Authorities and employers, not SAMS, set zone classification.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.

Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Cold, wet and windy conditions affect battery life and touchscreen use with gloves, particularly offshore and at wind farms. Check the lowest rated ambient temperature on the certificate, the water ingress rating and whether touch input works with wet or gloved hands.
Typically the EU declaration of conformity, the certificate, the Ex marking details and instructions in the local language, which may be Danish or English depending on the operator. Request the site's equipment register template so supplier documents can be matched to it.
The classification of areas into zones comes from the emergency management agency under an executive order, while the employer's duty to assess explosion risk and hold an explosion protection document comes from the Danish Working Environment Authority. SAMS classifies nothing. Confirm the arrangement with the site operator for your plant.
