Industrial concentration
The northern part of the island is an industrial area, with oil storage in the south and a gas pipeline link to Saudi Arabia.
Sitra is an island on the east side of Bahrain Island whose northern part is an industrial area. Sitra handles Bahrain's whole petroleum output and hosts the Port of Sitra. This page explains what to look for in an explosion proof smartphone for Sitra, Bahrain, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Sitra, Bahrain: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Status: pre-launch. IECEx, ATEX, UKEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued; launch is planned for Q4 2026. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Sitra. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The companies on site and the hazardous-area types a handset is likely to meet there.
The northern part of the island is an industrial area, with oil storage in the south and a gas pipeline link to Saudi Arabia.
The site is coastal, hot and humid, so corrosion and dust are routine concerns for portable electronics.
The first oil infrastructure on Sitra was built in 1934 by Bapco, including a draw bridge connecting the island to Bahrain Island.
Bapco oil storage reservoirs are in the south of the island, and Sitra is the terminus of a 42 km pipeline linking it to Dhahran in Saudi Arabia.
The Bahrain Extrusion Company has operated an aluminium extrusion plant in the Sitra industrial zone since March 1977, so metal-working sits alongside oil facilities.
Sitra is an island about 5 km south of Manama, and its northern section has been turned into an industrial area.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Sitra, Bahrain. Around Sitra, loose talk of explosion-proof covers very different things. Hydrocracking and hydrogen units, crude and product storage and sulphur recovery each need the right protection concept. Flameproof Ex d suits fixed equipment; intrinsic safety suits portable devices. The IS-04Z1 follows intrinsic safety, with certification still pending.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, crude and product storage, hydrogen and hydrocracking units, sulphur recovery units. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Construction of a refinery upgrade began in March 2019 and included a new resid hydrocracking unit planned for operation by 2023. Confirm the current project and commissioning status with Bapco.
Mainly the Bapco refinery and storage reservoirs, with process units, tank farms and loading facilities, plus the port. The extrusion and other light industry may have limited zones. Ask each operator for its classification drawing.
It can, because hydrogen units sit in the most demanding gas group, so the marking must cover that group. Sitra has hydrogen and hydrocracking units. Ask the operator for the classification of each unit and compare it with the device label rather than assuming one marking fits the whole refinery.
