Austria: industry on the ground
Machinery and equipment, vehicles, chemicals, metals, and iron and steel are leading sectors, so chemical plants, foundries and paint and coating lines add solvent and dust hazards beyond oil and gas.
The IS-04Z1 is an ex proof phone designed to ATEX 2014/34/EU for gas and dust atmospheres, built for refinery turnarounds, gas stations on the transit grid, steel works and fibre plants. If you are specifying an explosion proof smartphone for Austria, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Austria: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

Machinery and equipment, vehicles, chemicals, metals, and iron and steel are leading sectors, so chemical plants, foundries and paint and coating lines add solvent and dust hazards beyond oil and gas.
OMV AG, an integrated oil, gas and petrochemical group, is Austria's largest energy business, with a turnover of about 36 billion euros in 2021, and its refining and chemicals sites are typical Zone 1 and Zone 2 workplaces.
Transport used 31.3% of energy in 2021, the largest share of any sector, and the last coal plant closed in 2020, so fuel logistics and gas networks are the main thermal energy infrastructure.
Imported oil supplied 35.4% of energy consumed in 2022 and gas 16.8%, so pipelines, storage and distribution terminals form a large share of Austria's flammable-materials infrastructure.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Austria. At Schwechat, Baumgarten or Linz, explosion proof usually means flameproof Ex d for fixed equipment, but a handheld at a Zone 1 pump house or a Zone 21 bagging hall is different. The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, limiting energy so it can be used live in both. The Austrian classification of the area belongs to the employer.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
The market guide for Austria covers Schwechat, Baumgarten an der March, Linz, Donawitz and Leoben, among others. Site-level pages are linked below.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Yes, as an EU member Austria applies ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU to equipment, and workplaces are zoned under Directive 1999/92/EC. Devices for Zone 1 or Zone 2 areas normally need the Ex marking, CE marking and documentation. Check the operator's list of accepted categories.
OMV AG is the largest energy business, with integrated oil, gas and petrochemical activity, so it is a major source of classified areas. Other sites include chemical plants and utility sites. Supplier approval is run by each company, so contact its procurement and safety teams.
No: ATEX 2014/34/EU, transposed by the Explosionsschutzverordnung 2015, is the whole product-side requirement and there is no separate Austrian product approval. The employer's duties sit under the VEXAT, which is where evaluation time goes. SAMS holds no ATEX certificate yet. Confirm what your site's explosion protection document needs.
