Large complexes
The Habshan complex has five plants with 14 processing trains, and Ruwais combines a refinery, NGL fractionation and polyolefin production on one industrial site.
Abu Dhabi is the home of ADNOC and the UAE's main oil and gas operations. Mussafah, an industrial district south-west of the city and a special economic zone, has numerous factories and its own port, and hydrocarbon-intensive industries have been among its growth areas. If you are specifying an explosion proof smartphone for Abu Dhabi emirate, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Abu Dhabi emirate: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Abu Dhabi. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

Das Island lies about 160 km off the mainland and houses roughly 6,000 rotating industry personnel, so access is controlled by the operator.
Khalifa Port's onshore area connects directly to the Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi, so customs, inspection and freight facilities sit next to manufacturers.
The city sits on an island less than 250 m from the mainland and is joined to it by the Maqta, Mussafah and Sheikh Zayed bridges, which shape road transfers to the industrial districts.
The UAE regulator has added advanced mobile location testing to mandatory cell phone tests and introduced a new compliance mark from 1 January 2023, so confirm handset labelling.
Khalifa Port handles all of the emirate's container traffic since the move from Zayed Port was completed in December 2012; the port island is about 5 km offshore.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Abu Dhabi emirate. Across gas trains, refinery units, petrochemical plants and offshore platforms, explosion-proof is used loosely. Flameproof Ex d enclosures protect fixed electrical equipment; a handheld phone is better served by intrinsic safety. Sour gas conditions in parts of the emirate make the operator's own area rules especially important.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
Likely candidates are gas processing trains, lng and gas processing on das island, refinery process units, ngl fractionation. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Radio devices normally need approval from the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority, using the current compliance label. Certificates are typically renewed every three years, and mobile phones face additional tests such as advanced mobile location. Check with your importer before shipment.
Mussafah to the south-west and the Khalifa Industrial Zone near Khalifa Port are the main industrial districts close to the city. Oil and gas processing is further out, for example on the western coast, so teams often travel long distances.
Parts of the Habshan area are designated Red Zone because of hydrogen sulphide, so site-specific safety rules apply on top of area classification. Those rules are set by the operator, not by the device maker. Ask the operator's HSE team what is required before any phone enters.
