Gul yard
ST Engineering bought the roughly 141,000 square metre Gul yard in 2023 for ship repair, in addition to its Benoi yard, which is mainly for shipbuilding.
Work at Seatrium's Singapore yards includes dry-docking, retrofitting, life extension and conversion of floating production vessels, gas carriers, tankers and jack-up rigs. Seatrium and ST Engineering shipyards at Gul, Benoi and Pioneer Sector create classified areas during vessel repair and coating work. Distribution partners for Pioneer, Jurong Industrial Estate are being identified ahead of the Q4 2026 launch of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Pioneer, Jurong Industrial Estate has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Pioneer Industrial Area. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
Who operates there and which kinds of classified area a handset would meet, from the SAMS site research.
ST Engineering bought the roughly 141,000 square metre Gul yard in 2023 for ship repair, in addition to its Benoi yard, which is mainly for shipbuilding.
The planning area has a population density of about 4 people per square kilometre and sits within the Jurong Industrial Estate developed by JTC.
Basic worker residential blocks are provided at Benoi Sector and Pioneer Road, so much of the yard workforce lives close to the sites and arrives on foot or by company transport.
Seatrium lists Pioneer Yard at 50 Gul Road, Tuas Yard at 51 Pioneer Sector 1 and Benoi Yard at 15 Benoi Road, three separate gates within the same western industrial belt.
Joo Koon MRT station opened on 28 February 2009 to serve Jurong Industrial Estate, and the East-West Line now runs further west to Tuas Link, so the estate has a direct rail link for staff.
Seatrium's Pioneer Yard has a 1,400 metre quay with 8 to 10 metres of depth, and a second yard adds a 350 metre quay, giving long continuous berths for vessels under repair.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Pioneer, Jurong Industrial Estate. Classified areas here are mostly tied to vessel work and coatings, so explosion-proof means different things for a paint shop and a tank. Flameproof Ex d suits fixed gear, while handhelds rely on intrinsic safety. The IS-04Z1 is designed for intrinsic safety, so specify the concept.
Distribution of the IS-04Z1 is by authorised partners only, and SAMS has not yet granted a territory for Pioneer, Jurong Industrial Estate. Each application is reviewed on its merits. Because opening a certified Ex handset in an ordinary workshop invalidates its certificate, the partner must be able to support and service the device locally.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
Likely candidates are shipyard and marine work areas, paint and coating shops, fabrication yards. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Pioneer, Jurong Industrial Estate.
Not necessarily. Each yard has its own address, switchboard and gate, and contractor induction and permit steps are normally run per yard and per project. Ask your sponsor for the rules for the specific yard and the vessel you will board.
Seatrium describes repair and upgrade work on LNG and LPG carriers, floating production units, jack-up rigs, tankers, container ships and heavy-lift vessels. Gas carriers and floating production units generally bring the strictest hazardous-area controls.
No. Each tenant has a different hazard profile, and classification is set tenant by tenant. A coating shop, a dry dock and a fabrication yard can differ. Confirm with the site operator which areas, if any, are classified before choosing a handheld for the task.
