QatarEnergy: background
Shell employed the first offshore drilling platform in the Eastern Hemisphere east of Qatar in 1955, an early sign of Qatar's long marine oil history that still shapes its offshore fields.
The North Field East expansion, signed as an EPC contract with Chiyoda and Technip in February 2021, was planned to lift LNG export capacity from 77 to 110 million tonnes a year. It administers the Ras Laffan and Mesaieed industrial cities and has interests across exploration and production, LNG, refining and petrochemicals. Buyers searching for an explosion proof mobile phone supplier for QatarEnergy can take the datasheet and the certification schedule for the IS-04Z1 now; supply follows certification.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. An explosion proof mobile phone for QatarEnergy cannot be bought yet: the SAMS IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued), and the datasheet, certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Qatar. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of its operations and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
QatarEnergy's Supply Management section describes vendor registration through its Mushtaryat Portal, which issues a SAP Vendor Code required for tender documents, and a Projects Preferred Manufacturers List (PML); confirm current requirements with its procurement and HSE teams. The Ex certificate and an organisation's own vendor or engineering approval are two separate timelines; SAMS is working towards both and holds neither today.
Shell employed the first offshore drilling platform in the Eastern Hemisphere east of Qatar in 1955, an early sign of Qatar's long marine oil history that still shapes its offshore fields.
Qatar took full ownership of the onshore concession in September 1976 and of the offshore concession in February 1977, after a phased nationalisation that began in 1973. The national company dates from 1974.
Two refineries operate: the Umm Said refinery at 137,000 barrels a day, and the Laffan refinery at Ras Laffan, which came on stream in September 2009 on field condensate.
Offshore crude is piped to Halul Island for processing and export, while most onshore oil goes to Umm Said (Mesaieed) for refining or export, so tank farms and marine loading are central to its operations.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In QatarEnergy. LNG liquefaction, refinery units and petrochemical plants use many protection concepts under the name explosion-proof. Flameproof Ex d covers fixed motors and junction boxes, and intrinsic safety suits handhelds. A phone relies on intrinsic safety, with a target marking of II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, once certified.
There is no stock to order for QatarEnergy yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch, certification is in progress, and supply will run through authorised distributors after the certificates are issued. Procurement teams can prepare now with the datasheet, the certification schedule and a safe-area evaluation.

Which certificates are in progress, in what order, and what is still to be confirmed.
Evaluation units can be used for connectivity, MDM enrolment and workflow testing outside classified areas.

Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
QatarEnergy's Supply Management section describes vendor registration through its Mushtaryat Portal, which issues a SAP Vendor Code required for tender documents, and a Projects Preferred Manufacturers List (PML); confirm current requirements with its procurement and HSE teams.
Through authorised distributors once certificates exist. Until then SAMS can send the datasheet and certification schedule and arrange safe-area evaluation units.
Large expansion projects are usually run through EPC contractors that apply the operator's specifications, so equipment may be approved by the contractor and the operator together. Ask the project team which standards, certificates and vendor lists apply to the work package before ordering.
QatarEnergy is the national company, but many plants are run by subsidiaries and joint ventures such as the LNG, refining and petrochemical operating companies. Each can have its own HSE rules and supplier registration, so confirm requirements with the operating company that controls the site you will visit.
The IS-04Z1 has IP68 dust and water protection and a 4,000 mAh battery. Operating temperature limits will be set by the final certificate and datasheet, so check them against Ras Laffan conditions before use. IP68 is not explosion protection. Confirm the area classification with the site operator.
