Riyadh is Saudi Arabia's capital and its administrative and commercial centre, with almost one-third of the country's factories. The Communications, Space and Technology Commission in Riyadh issues radio type-approval certificates; they are renewed every two years and European test documents are accepted. If you are specifying an explosion proof mobile phone for Riyadh, this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Riyadh: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
For the record, no certificate exists for the IS-04Z1 today. The programme is under way ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Riyadh. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The companies on site and the hazardous-area types a handset is likely to meet there.
Summer highs near 44 C and occasional severe dust storms.
Factories produce machinery, chemicals, construction materials, food and other goods, so hazard profiles differ by plant.
Winters can be surprisingly cold, with a January average low of about 7 C, and most of the little rain falls in March and April, so the temperature range is wide.
More than 500 foreign companies have moved regional headquarters to Riyadh, alongside banks and major Saudi firms, so many equipment buyers and project teams are based in the capital.
Dust storms occur in Riyadh and can cut visibility to under 10 m, so filters, port covers and sealed enclosures matter for handheld equipment.
King Khalid International Airport lies about 35 km north of the city centre and is the main hub for visitors, which sets the transfer time to inland industrial areas.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Riyadh. Riyadh's factories produce machinery, chemicals, construction materials and food, so hazard profiles differ by plant. Explosion-proof may mean flameproof Ex d for a chemical plant's gas area, while dust areas need other concepts. The IS-04Z1 is designed for intrinsic safety in gas atmospheres.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, chemical and manufacturing plants, industrial plant dust areas (zone 21). Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Rarely, but winters are cooler than many expect, with a January average low around 7 C. The bigger issue is summer heat. Check the datasheet operating range and avoid leaving devices in vehicles; the plant operator may set its own limits.
Yes. Dust storms can cut visibility to under 10 m, so a sealed device with a stated ingress protection rating and good port covers is sensible. Dust ingress and combustible dust in a plant are different issues; follow the operator's dust-zone classification for hazardous areas.
Not necessarily. Many buyers and contractors are based in Riyadh even when the classified areas are elsewhere, because most hydrocarbon sites are in the Eastern Province. Ask where the device will be used, and check the classification for that site, not for the city of purchase.
