LNG terminal
KOGAS operates the Incheon terminal, one of its regasification terminals, which began operating in 1996.
Incheon is South Korea's second largest port, west of Seoul, and forms the heart of the Capital Industrial Region with the Bupyeong, Juan and Namdong industrial complexes. Incheon International Airport and Incheon Port make the city a transport hub for north-east Asia, and port traffic is large enough to classify it as a large-port metropolis. This page explains what to look for in an explosion proof mobile phone for Incheon, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Incheon: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.
| Check | What to look for | IS-04Z1 today |
|---|---|---|
| Protection concept | Flameproof (Ex d) or intrinsic safety (Ex i) | Intrinsic safety, level ib |
| Zone suitability | Zone 1 gas and Zone 21 dust | Design target for Zone 1 and 21 |

| Where it applies | Incheon: LNG storage tanks, LNG jetty and loading, Gas send-out | Classified by the site operator |

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Incheon. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
KOGAS operates the Incheon terminal, one of its regasification terminals, which began operating in 1996.
Proximity to Seoul and Incheon International Airport makes logistics straightforward.
Bio-industry is an emerging growth sector in Incheon, with biopharmaceutical production capacity described as among the largest in the world, which adds laboratory and solvent areas to the city's industrial mix.
Incheon is part of the Seoul Metropolitan Area, the world's fourth-largest by population, and its port and proximity to Seoul have driven its growth as a coastal industrial city.
A programme launched in 2007 aims to make Incheon as proficient in English as Singapore, which suggests English is more widely usable in the Free Economic Zone than in most Korean industrial cities.
In 2003 Incheon became South Korea's first free economic zone, and large local and global companies have since invested in the Incheon Free Economic Zone, including bio-industry projects at Songdo.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Incheon. At an LNG terminal, explosion-proof is a casual label. Flameproof Ex d suits fixed items such as pump motors, but a handheld phone near storage tanks and loading arms depends on intrinsic safety. The IS-04Z1 is designed on the intrinsic-safety concept, with certification in progress and KOGAS rules applying.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not today. Until the certificates are issued the IS-04Z1 stays out of classified areas, and until launch there is nothing to purchase. You can ask for the datasheet and the certification schedule, or book a safe-area evaluation unit.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
Likely candidates are lng storage tanks, lng jetty and loading, gas send-out, industrial complex chemical handling. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
The industrial parks, port tank storage and fuel handling at the airport and harbour can all involve flammable gases and liquids, while bio-industry plants add chemical solvents. Each operator defines zones and permits, so ask for classification drawings for your site.
The climate is mild by Korean standards, with distinct seasons, cold winter winds from the north-west and humid summers. Typical considerations are battery performance in cold weather and humidity and salt air near the port, so check device ratings against site conditions.
No. Incheon also has industrial complexes at Bupyeong, Juan and Namdong with chemical handling, and other industry such as a refinery has not been verified here. Each operator classifies its own areas. Confirm with the site operator.
