Aramco facilities are controlled-access sites; Dammam airport serves commercial travel.
Ras Tanura is a peninsula governorate bordered by Jubail to the north and Qatif to the west and south, so road access runs through neighbouring governorates. Refining, terminal and gas plant areas create Zone 1 conditions. An explosion proof mobile phone distributor in Ras Tanura would carry the IS-04Z1 to these buyers once certification completes.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Ras Tanura has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Ras Tanura. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The companies on site and the hazardous-area types a handset is likely to meet there.
Aramco facilities are controlled-access sites; Dammam airport serves commercial travel.
The oil terminal has North and South Piers and a Sea Islands section.
Commercial flights use King Fahd International Airport in Dammam; Ras Tanura's own airport is private and run by Aramco for its employees.
Saudi Arabia's Communications, Space and Technology Commission handles radio type approval; certificates are renewed every two years, with European test documents accepted.
The refinery was established in 1939 and expanded substantially after the Second World War, so equipment and layouts range from very old to recently modernised.
The area was officially called Rahima from 1941 until 1986, when the historical name was restored, so older Aramco documents and maps may use the earlier name.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Ras Tanura. On the piers and sea islands, explosion-proof describes protection concepts for flammable vapour at loading points. Flameproof Ex d equipment suits fixed installations, while a handheld on the pier is more likely to rely on intrinsic safety. The IS-04Z1 is designed for intrinsic safety, so state the concept needed.
SAMS is appointing authorised distributors ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No territory has been granted for Ras Tanura yet and applications are reviewed company by company. Because a certified Ex device cannot be opened by an ordinary phone workshop without invalidating its certificate, SAMS looks for partners who can provide competent technical support and after-sales service locally.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, crude export terminal piers and sea islands, storage tank farms, natural gas liquids fractionation (ju'aymah). Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Ras Tanura.
The area was officially named Rahima from 1941 until 1986, when Ras Tanura was restored. Drawings, maps or inspection records may therefore use either name, so make sure the area names in any asset register or work permit are matched before ordering equipment.
Visitors normally fly to King Fahd International Airport in Dammam and drive; Ras Tanura's own airport is private and operated by Aramco for its employees. A two-lane highway connects to the Dhahran to Jubail Highway. Site access is arranged through the host.
It can be. The peninsula is on the Gulf, so salt, humidity and heat apply on top of desert dust. IP68 sealing helps, but check the datasheet for the temperature range and for any limits on cleaning or exposure. Ask the operator about its own environmental requirements.
