Brazil: rules and approvals
An OCP may issue its certificate on the basis of an IECEx test report and quality assessment report if they are equivalent, but only under Model 5, so IECEx work helps without replacing national certification.
The IS-04Z1 is an Ex mobile phone for people working inside classified areas on Brazilian platforms, refineries, petrochemical units, mills and terminals. Certification is carried out by an INMETRO-accredited product certification body, called an OCP, and Model 5 certificates, which include a quality system audit and surveillance, are valid for six years. Distribution partners for Brazil are being identified ahead of the Q4 2026 launch of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. Brazil has no appointed SAMS distributor yet: the IS-04Z1 is pre-launch (certification in progress, no certificate issued, launch planned for Q4 2026), and distributor applications are open.
Current position: certification in progress, nothing issued, launch targeted for Q4 2026. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Brazil. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The classified areas, operators and sites below are the ones covered in the SAMS Brazil market guide.
An OCP may issue its certificate on the basis of an IECEx test report and quality assessment report if they are equivalent, but only under Model 5, so IECEx work helps without replacing national certification.
Petrobras began processing oil shale in 1953 with its Petrosix technology, and in 2006 its industrial retort could treat 260 tonnes of shale an hour.
ANATEL's CERTIFICA platform requires the local applicant's legal representative to sign a product warranty and technical support declaration, and certification templates need ICP-Brasil digital signatures.
The pre-salt oil fields lie within Brazil's exclusive economic zone and extend along the coast from Espirito Santo to Santa Catarina, with reserves estimated at more than 50 billion barrels.
“Explosion proof” is the phrase most buyers use for equipment that may be taken into a classified hazardous area. Strictly, it covers several protection concepts: a flameproof enclosure (Ex d) contains an internal explosion, while intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits electrical energy so that an ignition cannot start. Phones are normally intrinsically safe, because a flameproof handset would be too heavy to carry all shift.
The IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety, with a marking target of Ex ib IIC T4, and is designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21. It is pre-launch, certification is in progress and no certificate has been issued.
In Brazil. Explosion proof is the common phrase, but in Brazil the compliant answer is a certified product under Portaria INMETRO 115 of 2022, whatever the protection concept. Flameproof Ex d fits fixed equipment in refining at Paulínia or Duque de Caxias; the IS-04Z1 uses intrinsic safety instead. Area classification is the operator's, not SAMS's.
SAMS is appointing authorised distributors ahead of the Q4 2026 launch. No territory has been granted for Brazil yet and applications are reviewed company by company. Because a certified Ex device cannot be opened by an ordinary phone workshop without invalidating its certificate, SAMS looks for partners who can provide competent technical support and after-sales service locally.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.
It is intrinsically safe (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), which is the usual way to make a phone for hazardous areas. It is not a flameproof (Ex d) design, and certification is still in progress.

Under Portaria 115/2022 the manufacturer or the importer can apply to an INMETRO-accredited certification body, and the certificate carries the INMETRO seal. Who holds the certificate and how the factory is audited depend on the model chosen, so confirm the details with an OCP.
Not directly. INMETRO requires certification by an accredited OCP under Portaria 115/2022, although an OCP may base its certificate on an IECEx test report and quality report under Model 5. ATEX and IECEx certificates alone do not give market access, so confirm the route with a Brazilian OCP.
Android 16 runs the interface in Brazilian Portuguese, and Portuguese documentation is part of the launch package. That matters for training records under NR-20 and NR-10, which auditors expect in the working language. Certification is still in progress, so documentation is not yet final. Ask the supplier for sample pages.
