Hazardous Area Mobile Phone Distributor in Brazil

The IS-04Z1 is an Ex mobile phone for people working inside classified areas on Brazilian platforms, refineries, petrochemical units, mills and terminals. Petrobras began processing oil shale in 1953 with its Petrosix technology, and in 2006 its industrial retort could treat 260 tonnes of shale an hour. Distribution partners for Brazil are being identified ahead of the Q4 2026 launch of the IS-04Z1.

More about Brazil that matters for portable equipment

Brazil: rules and approvals

ANATEL's CERTIFICA platform requires the local applicant's legal representative to sign a product warranty and technical support declaration, and certification templates need ICP-Brasil digital signatures.

Brazil: industry on the ground

The pre-salt oil fields lie within Brazil's exclusive economic zone and extend along the coast from Espirito Santo to Santa Catarina, with reserves estimated at more than 50 billion barrels.

Brazil: rules and approvals

Certification is carried out by an INMETRO-accredited product certification body, called an OCP, and Model 5 certificates, which include a quality system audit and surveillance, are valid for six years.

Brazil: background

Petrobras was created in 1953 under the slogan The Oil Is Ours, was given a legal monopoly, and is headquartered in Rio de Janeiro; its REDUC refinery began operating in 1961.

The term · hazardous area

What “hazardous area” means for a smartphone

A hazardous area is a place where flammable gas, vapour or combustible dust may be present. Standards divide these into zones: Zones 0, 1 and 2 for gas and vapour, and Zones 20, 21 and 22 for dust. Zone 1 and Zone 21 are the tier where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation, which is where the IS-04Z1 is designed to work. Anything carried in must be marked for the zone, gas group and temperature class of the area.

No certificate has been issued for the IS-04Z1 yet, so it must not be taken into a classified area until the certificate covering it exists and the site operator has accepted it.

In Brazil. Brazil's classified areas run from offshore pre-salt fields and FPSOs through coastal refining at Paulínia, Suape and Camaçari to inland mining and cane mills. Dust is significant: bagasse and sugar, grain at export terminals, and ore handling. Operators such as Petrobras classify their own areas, and SAMS does not.

The route · distribution

Distributing the IS-04Z1 in Brazil

Distribution of the IS-04Z1 is by authorised partners only, and SAMS has not yet granted a territory for Brazil. Each application is reviewed on its merits. Because opening a certified Ex handset in an ordinary workshop invalidates its certificate, the partner must be able to support and service the device locally.

What SAMS looks for in a partner

Operator relationships
Existing supplier registrations or a clear route to them with the main operators and contractors in Brazil.
Ex-competent staff
People who understand zone classification, markings and the conditions of a certificate.

And equally important

Local-language support
Documentation, training and helpdesk in the languages the workforce uses.
Service capability
Spares, battery replacement and repair routed through SAMS-approved channels.
Questions · Brazil

Frequently asked questions

Can we buy a hazardous area mobile phone in Brazil today?

No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.

What does a hazardous area mobile phone in Brazil cost?

No price is published. While certification is in progress there is no list price and no committed lead time, and a supplier quoting a firm figure for an uncertified Ex handset is promising something it cannot stand behind. Indicative pre-launch pricing is issued in writing against a stated quantity and site.

Which hazardous areas is the IS-04Z1 designed for?

Zone 1 and Zone 21 (gas and dust) with gas group IIC and temperature class T4, subject to certification. It must not be used in a classified area before its certificate is issued and the site has accepted it.

Which sites in Brazil does this cover?

The market guide for Brazil covers Santos Basin pre-salt, Campos Basin, Duque de Caxias, Paulínia, among others. Site-level pages are linked below.

How do I become a SAMS distributor for Brazil?

Apply through the distributor page with your company details and the territory you cover. SAMS reviews applications company by company and has not yet granted a territory for Brazil.

Where does hazardous-area work concentrate in Brazil?

Typically offshore pre-salt platforms and floating units off the south-east coast, onshore refineries and terminals, petrochemical complexes and ethanol and sugar mills. Each operator issues its own area classification, so request the zone drawing, gas or dust group and temperature class before choosing equipment.

What does ANATEL require for a smartphone sold in Brazil?

Radio equipment needs ANATEL certification through the CERTIFICA platform, using a local legal representative who signs the warranty and technical support declaration, with digital signatures from ICP-Brasil on templates. Requirements change, so confirm current steps with ANATEL or an accredited certification body.

Is an IECEx or ATEX certificate enough for Brazil?

No: certification is compulsory and issued by an OCP accredited by INMETRO, under Portaria INMETRO 115 of 2022. IECEx data normally supports the Brazilian file without replacing it. The IS-04Z1 has no certificate of any kind yet. Check requirements with Petrobras or your contract's equipment specification.
