Remote location
The waterway is a deep natural harbour at the western end of Wales, so contractors often travel in for turnarounds.
Wales produced 30.2 TWh of electricity in 2018 and consumed 14.9 TWh, making it a net exporter, with gas generation at Baglan Bay and wind at Cefn Croes among its mix of plant. It hosts Valero's Pembroke refinery and the South Hook and Dragon LNG terminals, so Zone 1 work arises at process units, tank farms and gas handling areas. If you are specifying an Ex-proof smartphone for Wales (Milford Haven Waterway), this page covers the markings, the approvals and the current certification status of the IS-04Z1.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Wales (Milford Haven Waterway): pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. An operator's own vendor approval is a separate step. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.
| Check | What to look for | IS-04Z1 today |

| Ex marking | Group, category, protection concept, gas group, temperature class | II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4 (target) |
| Gas group | IIA, IIB or IIC matched to the area drawing | IIC (target) |

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Wales. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.

The waterway is a deep natural harbour at the western end of Wales, so contractors often travel in for turnarounds.
The Pembroke refinery began operating in 1964 and has been owned by Valero since 2011. Cardiff terminal supply by coastal tanker comes from here.
In 2012 the Milford waterway was announced as an Enterprise Zone because of its importance to the energy sector, and parts of it lie within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park with protected sites.
Airbus Broughton in the north-east employs over 6,500 people, mostly in manufacturing, and is responsible for wing assembly for most Airbus aircraft, so composites and solvent areas exist alongside heavy engineering.
Two LNG terminals, South Hook on a former refinery site and Dragon LNG on a former Gulf refinery site, were built from 2006 and could eventually supply about 25% of the UK's gas needs.
Oil refining at Milford Haven began with the first oil terminal and refinery in 1960, and the waterway still carries the jetties, oil terminals and shore processing facilities of the oil and power industries.
“Ex-proof” is shorthand for equipment carrying an explosion-protection marking (the Ex mark) that matches the area it enters. The marking states the protection concept, gas or dust group and temperature class, and it must be backed by a certificate issued by a recognised body, so a phone described as Ex-proof should come with a certificate number you can check.
The IS-04Z1 is designed to carry the marking II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. That is a target: certification is in progress, no certificate has been issued, and SAMS will publish the certificate numbers when they exist.
In Wales (Milford Haven Waterway). A marking check on the waterway would compare zone maps for LNG handling, where the gas is mainly natural gas, with refinery areas that handle a wider range of hydrocarbons. IIC marking offers margin. The IS-04Z1 target marking is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, pending certification; the operator decides.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
Not yet. The IS-04Z1 is pre-launch and its certification is still in progress ahead of a Q4 2026 launch. No unit goes into a classified area before the certificate covering it exists. The datasheet, the certification schedule and safe-area evaluation units are available now.
There is no list price yet. SAMS gives indicative pre-launch pricing in writing, against a stated quantity and site, and does not commit to a lead time before certification completes.
The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. It becomes a marking only when the certificate is issued; until then it is a design target.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, lng storage and regasification, crude and product jetties, tank farms. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Yes, Wales is within Great Britain's product rules, where equipment for explosive atmospheres is normally supplied with UKCA marking and CE-marked ATEX equipment has been widely accepted under transitional arrangements. Check the current position and any site-specific rules with the operator before supplying handheld devices.
Wales is mild but wet and windy, with salt spray at coastal terminals such as Milford Haven. Ingress protection, corrosion resistance and condensation tolerance are more important than extreme temperature ratings. Ask the site about its own environmental requirements for portable electronics.
The Milford Haven Waterway in Pembrokeshire hosts Valero's Pembroke refinery, which began operating in 1964, and the South Hook and Dragon LNG terminals. Zone 1 work arises at process units, tank farms and gas handling areas. Confirm requirements with each operator's HSE and procurement teams.
