Coastal climate
The Odisha coast is generally hot and humid with monsoon rain and cyclone exposure, so sealed devices suit outdoor work.
Crude is imported and products exported through the South Oil Jetty inside Paradip Port. Refining and polypropylene units create Zone 1 areas. This page explains what to look for in an Ex-proof smartphone for Paradip, Odisha, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Paradip, Odisha: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Paradip India. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
The companies on site and the hazardous-area types a handset is likely to meet there.
The Odisha coast is generally hot and humid with monsoon rain and cyclone exposure, so sealed devices suit outdoor work.
Indian Oil states that crude arrives through three single point moorings about 25 km out to sea for very large crude carriers, with a captive South Oil Jetty in Paradip Port also used for crude imports and product exports.
Products include petrol, diesel, LPG, aviation turbine fuel, kerosene, sulphur and petroleum coke, with a polypropylene plant commissioned in 2019-20.
The refinery says it discharges zero effluent and that its stack emissions are uplinked to the server of the Central Pollution Control Board.
It is the first Indian Oil refinery to process 15 million tonnes a year through a single atmospheric column and can process heavy crude oil.
Other companies in Paradip include IFFCO, Paradeep Phosphates, Bharat Petroleum, Hindustan Petroleum and Goa Carbon, so the town hosts fertiliser and fuel operators.
“Ex-proof” is shorthand for equipment carrying an explosion-protection marking (the Ex mark) that matches the area it enters. The marking states the protection concept, gas or dust group and temperature class, and it must be backed by a certificate issued by a recognised body, so a phone described as Ex-proof should come with a certificate number you can check.
The IS-04Z1 is designed to carry the marking II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. That is a target: certification is in progress, no certificate has been issued, and SAMS will publish the certificate numbers when they exist.
In Paradip, Odisha. A marking check at Paradip should compare the device with process units, polypropylene, product loading and crude receipt areas. Heavy crude units and propylene can sit in different gas groups. The IS-04Z1 target marking is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, and the operator's classification decides suitability.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. It becomes a marking only when the certificate is issued; until then it is a design target.
Likely candidates are refinery process units, crude receipt via single point moorings, polypropylene unit, product storage and loading. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Yes, Paradip is only about one metre above sea level on the Odisha coast, so humidity, salt air and storm events matter. Choose sealed, corrosion-resistant devices and confirm the ratings on the datasheet.
The refinery has a large atmospheric column, cracker and coker areas, tank farms and jetty facilities, with classified zones set by the operator. Request the area classification before taking portable devices.
Only if the operator and marine authorities allow it and the device suits the area classification. Moorings are about 25 km offshore and have separate marine procedures. Confirm with the operator which devices are permitted there and under what permit.
