Coastal climate
The area is generally hot and humid with monsoon rain, so sealed devices suit outdoor work.
The L and T shipyard at Hazira began building small ships and naval craft in 2010 and was renamed the A M Naik Heavy Engineering Complex in 2021. Its LNG terminal, gas and petrochemical plants and heavy engineering works create Zone 1 and Zone 21 areas. This page explains what to look for in an Ex-proof smartphone for Hazira, Surat, and where the IS-04Z1 stands against that list today.
Pre-launch · certification in progress · Launching Q4 2026
Short answer. The SAMS IS-04Z1 is the intrinsically safe smartphone covered here for Hazira, Surat: pre-launch, designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 (marking target Ex ib IIC T4), with certification in progress and no certificate issued.
Where things stand: the IS-04Z1 has not launched, and none of its four certification routes has produced a certificate yet. Operator approval runs on its own timeline. Certification status. Place facts reviewed October 2026.

An intrinsically safe Android smartphone designed for Zone 1 and Zone 21 hazardous areas in Hazira India. It is pre-launch: IECEx, ATEX and NEC 500 certification is in progress ahead of the Q4 2026 launch.
A short profile of the site and the kinds of classified area that matter for portable equipment.
The area is generally hot and humid with monsoon rain, so sealed devices suit outdoor work.
Shell Energy India operates the Hazira LNG terminal. The environmental clearance granted on 2 September 2025 covers expansion from 6.28 to 26.2 million tonnes a year, so this is an approved project rather than existing capacity.
The Hazira LNG terminal in Surat district was designed for 5 million tonnes a year of regasification, expandable to 10 million tonnes depending on demand.
The monsoon starts in late June and brings about 1,200 millimetres of rain by the end of September, with maxima around 32 degrees during those months.
Surat has a tropical savanna climate moderated by the sea, with April and May the hottest months at an average maximum of about 37 degrees Celsius.
Industrial names at Hazira include Essar, Kribhco, Shell, Larsen and Toubro, NTPC, ONGC, GAIL, Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation, UltraTech Cement and Reliance's Hazira Manufacturing Division.
“Ex-proof” is shorthand for equipment carrying an explosion-protection marking (the Ex mark) that matches the area it enters. The marking states the protection concept, gas or dust group and temperature class, and it must be backed by a certificate issued by a recognised body, so a phone described as Ex-proof should come with a certificate number you can check.
The IS-04Z1 is designed to carry the marking II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. That is a target: certification is in progress, no certificate has been issued, and SAMS will publish the certificate numbers when they exist.
In Hazira, Surat. A marking check at Hazira should distinguish gas areas, described as Zone 1, from dust areas, described as Zone 21. The gas group and temperature class come from the plant's classification, not from a general rule. The IS-04Z1 target marking is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4, which addresses gas only.
A short checklist for anyone writing or reviewing the specification, with the IS-04Z1 status against each point.
No. Nothing can be bought or taken into a classified area today: certification is in progress and launch is planned for Q4 2026. What is available now is the datasheet, the written certification schedule and evaluation units for safe-area use.
SAMS has not published a price. Any figure you are offered for an uncertified Ex phone should be treated with caution; written indicative pricing is available for a defined quantity and site.
The marking target is II 2 G Ex ib IIC T4. It becomes a marking only when the certificate is issued; until then it is a design target.
Likely candidates are lng regasification, gas processing, petrochemical plants, marine terminals. Which areas are classified, and to what zone, is set by the site operator's own area classification drawings.
Not exactly. Explosion proof is a broad everyday term; intrinsic safety is one protection concept, which limits energy so ignition cannot occur. Flameproof (Ex d) is a different concept that contains an explosion. The IS-04Z1 is intrinsically safe by design.
Hazira is 22 kilometres from Surat and the drive takes about 30 to 35 minutes. Most visitors fly into Surat, and heavy plant traffic and monsoon rain can slow the road.
Hazira combines an LNG terminal, gas and power plants, a manufacturing division and a shipyard, so it has gas-hazard zones, hot-work areas and mixed-use industrial zones. Always get the area classification and equipment rules from the specific operator.
The terminal operator does, through its permit and area classification system, with PESO as national regulator. Rules usually cover approved equipment, permits and charging. Ask the operator's safety team what evidence they need from a supplier before a new handheld may enter.
